A Love Letter to Our Little Lords and Masters.

First in Fly: Drosophila Research and Biological Discovery by Stephanie Elizabeth Mohr

October 27, 2019 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

I think Stephanie Elizabeth Mohr has done us all a great service by writing this book. As a drosophilist myself (or in more common parlance, a fly-pusher) I understand completely why Drosophila is such a great model organism to work for genetics. It’s a damned shame though that this understanding has not really trickled down to the rest of the population, who just don’t get it the way we do. Mention that you’re being paid by the government to study flies, and people look at […]

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

October 27, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

The Little Prince is one of those books that I have been aware of for a long time but had somehow not gotten around to yet.  It’s status as an all time great is why I chose it for the ‘Classic’ square in Cannonball bingo.  I’m using ‘Classic’ for my Reader’s Choice square to replace ‘Remix’. I became aware of the power in The Little Prince, and how it affects readers, through tattoo art relating to the book.  In most every tattoo gallery featuring art inspired […]

Hard Time

The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead

October 27, 2019 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

CBR11Bingo: Own Voices Earlier this year I reviewed Colson Whitehead’s novel The Underground Railroad, which won a ton of literary prizes. I found Whitehead’s use of magical realism odd and a little off-putting. It wasn’t embedded into the story and thus felt unnecessary. In my opinion it detracted from the novel’s story, which felt like a shame. The Nickel Boys is radically different, though Whitehead again chooses a weighty topic as his subject matter. In spare and unassuming prose Whitehead relates the story of Elwood […]

Double Cannonball with a Bingo twist!

My Boyfriend is a Bear by Pamela Ribon and Cat Farris

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

October 26, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo: Illustrated My Boyfriend is a Bear, Pamela Ribon and Cat Farris (2 Stars) To be honest graphic novels are probably the most “not my wheelhouse” genre for me but since an illustrated book was required for Bingo My Boyfriend is a Bear checks off this square instead. I chose My Boyfriend because it was written by Pamela Ribon and since I am not a comic reader I didn’t want to read the first of a long series I had no intentions to complete. Obviously one has to […]

Another trip to En Zed

Just Come Over by Rosalind James

October 25, 2019 by KatSings 2 Comments

Bingo Update: This is my Birthday square. Rosalind James’ birthday is July 28th. Look, you guys know the drill here. I adore this big dumb series. I know exactly how it will end before I get to the end of the first chapter, and I don’t care a whit. I love travelling to New Zealand in my mind and spending time with these characters, even with as trite and predictable and genre-fied as the stories can be. This is more of the same, so if […]
