Nonfiction reviews for CBR Bingo

The Trial of Lizzie Borden by Cara Robertson

Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, the Couple Who Taught America How to Love by Thomas Maier

The Amnityville Horror by Jay Anson

August 13, 2019 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

So part of my “catch up while husband is overseas” plan involved writing 5 reviews per day but since that took roughly 100 years last night I decided to shoot for a more reasonable three. I am also going to try and find common threads between my reviews so it makes a bit more sense. All of the below reviews are “true stories” but I only needed one to check off the True Story Bingo square- CBR Bingo: True Story The Trial of Lizzie Borden, […]

An army doctor walks into a bar. . .

A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

August 13, 2019 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

CBR11bingo: Classics Have you ever gotten super into a television show in its second or third season, so you went back to watch it from the beginning so you could see what you missed, and then realized, “Huh. If I’d actually tried watching this from the pilot episode, I might not have been so interested”? (I’m looking at you, X-Files.) A Study in Scarlet is sort of like that. Few works of literary fiction have spawned as many retellings, homages, and–dare I say–fantasies (and now […]

“Heroism’s just doing more than you want to do or think you can.” (CBR11 Bingo)

Northern Lights by Nora Roberts

August 13, 2019 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

I’m glad this Bingo Square is Summer Read, not Beach Read because I have a very peculiar definition of what I read at the beach and it is not vacation “light reading”! Northern Lights might not count for some (there are a few murders and a male protagonist fighting through depression) but a Nora Roberts romance will always be a Summer Read for me. I’ve read Northern Lights before, but its been a long time. In Northern Lights we follow Nate Burke as he moves […]

Just because it’s true doesn’t make it a good story.

To Cut a Long Story Short by Jeffrey Archer

August 13, 2019 by blauracke Leave a Comment

This is a collection of 14 short stories with most of them based on true incidents, some observed by the author himself, some told to him by others. They range from a married woman being seduced by a con artist, to a South African having a change of heart regarding his racist views, to a man funding his talentless brother’s life as an artist. At first glance, the stories seemed to be rather diverse in their range of topics and characters, but the further I […]

CBRBingo – Summer Read. More Poehler, please.

Yes Please by Amy Poehler

August 13, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

CBRBingo – Summer Read Reread July 2019 (third review). As I again turn to Amy Poehler in the summer (last time, was summer 2016) I would definitely call this the quintessential summer read. Great on the beach, fun and funny, Poehler is a rollicking good time. Aside from George Orwell’s 1984 and my annual Christopher Reading of “The Stupidest Angel” this is the only other book I have reread since I was a kid. It is equal parts memoir and self-help and Poehler is a […]
