A Hit and A Miss

Food Swings by Jessica Seinfeld

My Greek Table by Diane Kochilas

September 14, 2019 by Manimama 6 Comments

CBR11 Bingo: Collection A friend got me Jessica Seinfeld’s Food Swings for Christmas. It made me seriously question our friendship at the time. My friend is very much into celebrity-adjacent, Real Housewives-type stuff; I very much am not. I decided to try out a couple of recipes this past month before giving it away, and I have to take back every uncharitable thought I had about this gift. Jessica Seinfeld must have been anticipating people like me, because she even writes a section in the […]

Wild Game is a Wild Ride

Wild Game : My Mother, Her Lover, and Me by Adrienne Brodeur

September 14, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

CBR11Bingo- True Story Yikes. Wild Game: My Mother, Her Lover, and Me is a lot to take in. Adrienne Brodeur puts it all out there for us, which I’m sure was great for therapy but I can’t imagine that this book is well-loved by her family. The book begins with a visit from family friends when Brodeur was fourteen years old. Her step-father Charles’ friend Ben and his wife Lily have come to visit at their summer home. Brodeur’s mother, Malabar, wakes her up from […]

Everyone has felt like Moon Girl at one time or other – #CBR11Bingo: “And so it begins”

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: The Beginning by Brandon Montclare (writer), Amy Reeder (writer), Natacha Bustos (artist), Marco Failla (artist)

September 14, 2019 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

For a couple years now, people have been telling me to read Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.  I even bought it for my daughters, they read it and loved it, but it sat on the shelf unread by me.  Then an adorable video of a parent and child cosplaying, with a preschool aged Moon Girl and a parent in a blow up dinosaur costume, was posted on the Cannonball Read Book Chat Facebook page by emmalita.  It was adorable and gave me the push to […]

“Therapy is like a toothbrush. You can’t really put it to use for anybody but yourself”

Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes

September 14, 2019 by Malin 1 Comment

#CBR11 Bingo: Reader’s Choice (in place of Back to School) (would also work for a Pajiba or Listicle square, as well as Summer Read) Eveleth “Evvie” (rhymes with ‘chevy’) Drake has packed the car and is about to leave her husband when she gets a phone call that he’s been in a car accident. Before she can make it to the hospital, he is dead. About a year later, everyone thinks Evvie has kept to herself, isolated in her big house, because she’s overcome with grief. She […]

Fantastic Fantasy Fun

The Mortal Word by Genevieve Cogman

September 14, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 24 (I love this) The Invisible Library series is just plain fun fantasy, with a sprinkle of literary humor. The basic premise is an extra-dimensional library where rare books from all over the various worlds and realms are kept. The Librarians who work there often go to great lengths to acquire new titles or versions, including theft and adventure of various sorts. The Library is supposed to keep balance in the universe, especially between the forces of Chaos (the Fey) and natural Order (the […]

A quiet fantasy that speaks to the heart (#AwardWinner)

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison

September 14, 2019 by Aquillia Leave a Comment

One of the truly loveliest fantasies I read this year was The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison. This one came highly recommended to me on a facebook group where I asked for non-grimdark, political intrigue fantasy. The recommender really hit the mark, and I recommend it to any lover of fantasy! It’s steampunk but not in-your-face about it, bittersweet but not everything-is-s*** like grimdark, and it’s also an award winner! It won the 2015 Locus Award (and was also nominated for the 2014 Nebula and the […]
