Red Tinted Glasses and Painted on Time

The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy

September 26, 2019 by lumenatrix Leave a Comment

After reading this book I read an interview with the author in the back. In this interview she mentioned that her goal was to make a “completely unfilmable book.” I have to say that, at least in my opinion, she very much succeeded. I cannot imagine how this could ever be adapted without major changes of many kinds. This is the story of Estha and Rahel, two egg twins. It is also the story of their Ammu. It is also the story of an English […]

“We’re not gonna throw away the past as if it meant nothing.”

Pride by Ibi Zoboi

Bingo Square: Remix This is an update/remix of Pride and Prejudice. Set in present day Brooklyn, its focus this time is the Benitez sisters, and is narrated by second child, Zuri. She is strong-willed and loves her family fiercely, especially her older sister, Janae, who is coming home from university for the summer. But a new family has moved in across the street and they take Janae’s attention – especially older brother Ainsley. But it’s Darius, the seemingly judgemental and arrogant younger brother who gets […]

Huzzah! Bingo!

Well Met by Jen DeLuca

September 26, 2019 by scootsa1000 1 Comment

A few weeks back, I saw the good folks over at One More Page Books showcasing this book on their social media. It looked really cute, so I popped over on my way home from work and bought it. Reader, it was an absolute fricking delight. I have never been to a Renaissance Faire in my entire life. I still don’t ever plan to go to one. But my ignorance and inability to personally relate to the theme of this book in no way deterred […]

Not just a [Lady], but a Scientist (Bingo: Science!)

A Natural History of Dragons: A Memoir by Lady Trent by Marie Brennan

September 25, 2019 by sistercoyote 3 Comments

Brennan’s world of dragons and Scirlandish nobility and the Fish Out of Water trope is worth reading, but I don’t think I, personally will bother reading the second unless I get very bored. I think my biggest issue is (pseudo)Victorian fatigue.

“In her they instinctively sensed an outlaw, and theirs was the task of policing nature.”

The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall

September 25, 2019 by blauracke Leave a Comment

Stephen Gordon’s father desperately wanted a son but what he got instead is a daughter who fences and rides like a man, and who falls in love with women. She feels isolated and apart from ‘normal’ people until she meets a young woman during World War I who finally returns her affection. Societal pressure, however, threatens to destroy her happiness. Written by an author who described herself as a ‘congenital invert’ and first published in 1928, this was banned in the UK for obscenity even […]

The Reality of Space Travel

To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers

September 25, 2019 by Ale 1 Comment

The lovely faintingviolet thrust this upon me a few days ago, and since I still hadn’t found something for my Science square, this little book was perfect. Faintingviolet’s a huge fan of Becky Chambers, and really enjoyed her first book, The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. As I’m not so much in the sci-fi end of the speculative world, I’d never come across Chambers’ work before, but I was pleasantly surprised at how wonderful this novella was. Chambers builds an entire world in a […]
