Classic and a remix, and I’m not sure about either

A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle

A Study in Seduction by Eva Chase

August 21, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

CBR11Bingo Classic and Remix squares. I had never read anything by Arthur Conan Doyle before this. I have to say, I was a little disappointed. The first half of the book was about what I expected- introductions of characters, segue in to the mystery to be solved, Holmes solves a case that no one else can. I think most of the English-speaking world has some familiarity with Sherlock Holmes, whether through book, movie, television show or references in other pop culture. I wasn’t expecting the […]

Oh Margaret. You can do so many things, but rapping is not one of them. (CBR 11 Bingo: Remix)

Hag-Seed: William Shakespeare's The Tempest Retold by Margaret Atwood

August 17, 2019 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

I love a good Shakespearean remix. I devour everything Margaret Atwood has to offer. I was delighted to come across Hag-Seed, as I am still haunted by her addition to the Canongate Myth Series (Penelopiad) 14 years after reading. Atwood sets her storm in the “summer-stock” theater world of world of far flung Canada. Our Prospero is a wrongfully toppled director of a prestigious theater; toppled by schemes, toppled by loss, and toppled by grief. His island takes the form of a prison, where he rises once […]

Silver in more ways than one

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

July 27, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Bingo Review 6 (Remix) I am loving this Bingo thing; it’s forcing me to pick up things I’ve been wanting to read but have hesitated to start for various reasons. Spinning Silver is one of these books. I really loved Naomi Novik’s Uprooted fairy tale retelling, and Spinning Silver does a lot of the same things. The biggest change though is also my biggest complaint. Verdict: Spinning Silver is a distant silver to Uprooted‘s gold. Spinning Silver is a mix between a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin […]

More P&P Fan Fiction Worth Reading

Longbourne by Jo Baker

July 15, 2019 by LanierHgts 1 Comment

Another Pride and Prejudice bit of fan fiction, this time from the perspective of the servants.  As a huge Jane Austen fan, I cannot express how much I loved this book.  It cleverly re-imagines what is happening “downstairs” both in response to what is happening “upstairs,” as well as an imagining of what is happening in the servants own lives. Cleverly, each chapter starts with a quote from Pride and Prejudice so that the reader knows what is happening upstairs with the Bennett family.  The […]
