When in doubt, be polite

Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede

Searching for Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede

Calling on Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede

Talking to Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede

Book of Enchantments by Patricia C. Wrede

I highly recommend this series to adults and children alike.  It feels clean, somehow.  There is good and wickedness, but everything eventually works out.  I would not hesitate to give the main series to my nieces and nephews.  There is a focus on manners and politeness and practicality.  Everyone can learn lessons from this, and even if they are lessons you’ve learned before, it’s good to be reminded! Dealing with Dragons I read this right before I read Ogre Enchanted, which probably was not good […]

“Beautiful girl, lovely dress, where she is now I can only guess”

Good as Gone by Amy Gentry

February 12, 2019 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

How does it affect a family when the worst thing imaginable happens? How do parents influence their child’s decisions without even realizing that they’re doing it? How do you deal with the fact that your long lost loved one might be an imposter? These are some of the themes throughout Amy Gentry’s suspense novel Good as Gone. The novel begins eight years from the present day when young Julie Whitaker is taken from her bedroom at knife point by an unknown abductor never to be […]

Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho

February 12, 2019 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

England has a bit of a problem.  Their magic is fading, and no one seems to know why. Zacharias, the new Sorcerer Royal, is determined to find out why, and hopefully fix the problem.  Poor Zacharias. He is young, and grieving for the death of his mentor, and suffering from a mysterious (to us, at least) malady. Oh, and he’s black. So really, there’s not much going for him. Prunella Gentleman is a young lady in a school for gentlewitches.  She’s not a student, though, […]

What stereotype are you most afraid of confirming?

Whistling Vivaldi And Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us by Claude M. Steele

February 12, 2019 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

A group of social psychologists at Princeton University conducted a study in which they asked white male students who were “reasonably athletically inclined” to play ten rounds on a miniature putting course in a laboratory. Some were told nothing about the purpose of the test, while others were told that the test measured natural athletic ability. Those that were told the test measured their athletic ability performed much worse than those who were told nothing about what the test might mean. In the second part […]

None of the Above: The Untold Story of the Altanta Public Schools Cheating Scandal, Corparate Greed, and Criminalization of Educators by Shani Robinson and Anna Simonton

February 12, 2019 by Chris Leave a Comment

Disclaimer: I received a copy via a giveaway on Libirarything. This book about the Atlanta school test cheating scandal is really two books in one body and as such is not as good a book as it could be. Shani Robinson was a teacher at Dunbar Elementary in Atlanta. After she left the school, she was charged as one of the teachers who allegedly changed answers on standardized tests. Robinson plead not guilty, but sadly, lost in court. She is appealing. I hope she wins. […]

I have no idea what I’m doing

Exhibition Design by Philip Hughes

February 11, 2019 by tillie 4 Comments

Say you get a new job, one that’s your dream, but also that you’re grossly under-qualified for. You have limited experience, it requires you move to a different country and you basically have a month to do it. What would you do? Buy a book? Well, congratulations you’re 100% like me. Also you will buy this particular book because you liked the cover. #GoodChoices. This book is not the bible of exhibition design it’s a low-stakes introduction, a sort of ‘which-one-where-does-what’ of exhibition design. I […]
