Happy Birthday, Toni Morrison!

Tar Baby by Toni Morrison

February 18, 2019 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Toni Morrison was born February 18, 1931. She is the GOAT of American Literature. Tar Baby is Toni Morrison’s fourth novel, published in 1981. Set on a private Caribbean island, New York City and a small Florida town, it is a novel that grapples head on with race, sex, class, and the relationship black Americans have with both the past and future.  The novel begins shortly before Christmas on L’Arbe de la Croix, a private island owned by an American candy magnate named Valerian Street. […]

Just when you thought cancer couldn’t suck any more than it already does

The Neuroscientist Who Lost Her Mind: My Tale of Madness and Recovery by Barbara K. Lipska with Elaine McArdle

February 18, 2019 by KimMiE" 2 Comments

Barbara K. Lipska had already survived two encounters with the dreaded “C” disease when weird things started happening to her brain. In 2009 she fought off breast cancer, undergoing a mastectomy of her left breast, and then, in 2012, she defeated melanoma, or so she thought. That’s the trouble with cancer; you’re never really “cured.” There’s always the chance that it can metastasize somewhere else in your body. For Lipska, a neuroscientist who specializes in studying mental illness, the disease came roaring back in the […]

Death and Destruction on the Thames in London by Anthony Galvin

February 17, 2019 by Chris Leave a Comment

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book via Netgalley courtesy of the publisher. Gavin’s book presents the history of the Thames in terms of flooding, shipwrecks, and other issues. At times, one wonders about the use of the phrase “on the Thames”, there is a bit much on the Great Fire of London, some on terrorist attacks, and a bit on Jack the Ripper. Yet, the book is good. There is a ton of detail here. Galvin includes a list and brief history of […]

“Squirrels again?” “They started it!”

Hot and Badgered by Shelly Laurenston

February 16, 2019 by alphabootoo Leave a Comment

I picked up Hot and Badgered solely because of the review by noodlestein’s danger tits, who admitted that she enjoyed it despite not being a fan of paranormal romance. I also tend to avoid that subgenre, but I figured this one might be would be worth a try. It was an interesting read – surprisingly light on the romance and what romance it did have leaned toward sweet rather than raunchy. Most of the story focused on the relationship between the three honey badger sisters, […]

Poetry that is beautiful

Thrall by Natasha Trethewey

February 16, 2019 by Chris Leave a Comment

If you like poetry, you should read Natasha Trethewey. These poems are, on one hand, about her relationship to her father, and, on the other hand, the position that black people have been too often placed in by white people. Thrall is an interesting word choice because it means being in someone’s power. There is the power that family holds over us. There is the hold that the art that inspired some of these poems had on Trethewey. There is the sense of ownership that […]

Good Collection

My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me by Kate Bernheimer

February 16, 2019 by Chris Leave a Comment

There is a misnomer on the cover of this book. Some short stories in this volume have not been commissioned for the book. Several of them have appeared in various magazines and collections (some have appeared over a decade ago). This is okay, for this is the first time that they are all collected together and I hadn’t read any of them before. The purpose of this collection in part, according to Bernheimer, is to present fairy tales as an acceptable source of literature, at […]
