Who doesn’t want an exploding wicker chicken?

Etiquette and Espionage by Gail Carriger

October 1, 2019 by Leedock Leave a Comment

CBR11 BINGO: So It Begins This novel is a re-read for me. I am a huge fan of Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate and Custard Protocolseries. However, her shift to YA in the Finishing School series set prior to the shenanigans in the Parasol Protectorate books didn’t really do it for me. To appeal to a younger audience, Carriger dialled down her hallmark cheeky sexual innuendo and unfortunately some of her witty banter and sass went along with it. I recently read Carriger’s latest and supposedly last full length novel set in the […]

Trees don’t wonder about things. They just grow.

The Silver Star by Jeannette Walls

October 1, 2019 by Leedock Leave a Comment

I had been holding off on reading this book because it’s the last of Walls’ books for me. I read both her memoir (Glass Houses) and “true-life novel” about her grandmother (Half Broke Horses) and loved them. Each deals with whip-smart children growing up, rather than being raised, in households where the adults are too preoccupied with their own needs. I normally don’t read book jackets to avoid spoiler-y details but there is a terrific quote in this one that completely sums up this author: […]

A merely OK book made much better by the voice cast

Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

September 29, 2019 by Malin 1 Comment

From Goodreads: Everyone knows Daisy Jones & The Six, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity . . . until now. Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice […]

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

September 27, 2019 by Leedock Leave a Comment

CBR11 BINGO: Far and Away (BINGO! Remix square to Reading the TBR square) This book has been repeatedly recommended to me via various online trickery. On the surface it seems like something that I would like: a book set in the wilds of Alaska. I dig nature. I like reading books where the pioneer spirit triumphs against all odds because I would die 3 days into that sort of thing and because I was borderline obsessed with Holly Hobbie and Little House on the Prairie when I was little. […]

Huzzah! Bingo!

Well Met by Jen DeLuca

September 26, 2019 by scootsa1000 1 Comment

A few weeks back, I saw the good folks over at One More Page Books showcasing this book on their social media. It looked really cute, so I popped over on my way home from work and bought it. Reader, it was an absolute fricking delight. I have never been to a Renaissance Faire in my entire life. I still don’t ever plan to go to one. But my ignorance and inability to personally relate to the theme of this book in no way deterred […]

Not just a [Lady], but a Scientist (Bingo: Science!)

A Natural History of Dragons: A Memoir by Lady Trent by Marie Brennan

September 25, 2019 by sistercoyote 3 Comments

Brennan’s world of dragons and Scirlandish nobility and the Fish Out of Water trope is worth reading, but I don’t think I, personally will bother reading the second unless I get very bored. I think my biggest issue is (pseudo)Victorian fatigue.
