A must read for Con lovers! (Conventions, not convicts!)

Geekarella by Ashley Poston

October 16, 2019 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

Why did I wait so long to read this?  This is pure awesomesauce! It’s a Cinderella retelling (obviously) that involves a fan convention (also obviously.)  But it’s more than that. The story revolves around the fictional tv show Starfield, a Star Trek-like show, but Star Trek exists here, so not really?  Maybe it’s closer to the show that Galaxy Quest is about, but it’s really something all its own.  (Ashley Poston does not shy away from using real show and actor names.  Thanks for that!) […]

Why was this so popular? I don’t get it.

Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews

October 16, 2019 by crystalclear 1 Comment

This seems to be a book that everyone in a certain age bracket has read.  A lot of people have read it, don’t get me wrong, but it seems that every woman over 50 I’ve talked to remembers reading it close to when it came out.  It was a big deal. It has multiple movie adaptations. And I can’t really see why. Maybe it’s for the nostalgia. While shelved in the adult section now, it was kind of a YA hit when it came out, […]

The Stationery Shop: Novel by Marjan Kamali

October 16, 2019 by ElCicco 1 Comment

My last review was The Saffron Kitchen, a novel set in modern London and in Iran in the 1950s and ‘60s, a novel about interrupted love and political upheaval. The Stationery Shop is a similar type of novel, set in 1953 Tehran and the modern US and also featuring interrupted love and political upheaval. While The Saffron Kitchen alludes to political developments in Iran, its main focus is on the trauma these events have caused its main character and her relationship with the love interest […]

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison

October 12, 2019 by Malin 1 Comment

3.5 stars Official description: The youngest, half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three sons in line for the throne are killed in an “accident,” he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving rightful heir. Entirely unschooled in the art of court politics, he has no friends, no advisors, and the sure knowledge that whoever assassinated his father […]

It was magic, until it suddenly wasn’t: CBR Bingo – Pajiba

Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

October 10, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Ever since Daisy Jones and The Six was released, it has been on my radar, in particular because it was highly praised on my two favorite pop culture websites Pajiba and Lainey Gossip .  When CBR Bingo was announced, I instantly knew what my Pajiba square book would be.  My first title for this review was, “What I imagined the 70s rock n’ roll scene was like”, but while Daisy Jones and The Six is a great time capsule into that era, that is not what the […]

If Uncle Stevie’s name is on it, odds are I’m going to read it.

Flight or Fright by Stephen King, Bev Vincent

October 10, 2019 by scootsa1000 1 Comment

CBR11bingo #TheCollection Its no secret that I am not a huge fan of flying. I understand that it is the safest way to travel. But I usually choose to drive if I can. I like to be able to choose my own route, to leave when I want to leave, to stop when I want to stop. I like to be in control of my journey. I think the lack of that control in an airplane is part of what makes me uneasy. Oh, and […]
