Maybe It Was Good But I Didn’t Like It (CBR10 BINGO)

August 26, 2018 by ASKReviews 2 Comments

CBR 10 BINGO Square: Birthday! (August 28, 1924) Best for: People who enjoy her style of writing, I’m guessing. In a nutshell: Istina is mentally ill and being ‘treated’ at an in-patient facility. For nine years. Worth quoting: “Later, the same nurses will become impatient with their charges; but at first they are full of sympathy.” “Few of the people who roamed the dayroom would have qualified as acceptable heroines, in popular taste; few were charmingly uninhibited eccentrics.” Why I chose it: I’ve been having […]

“There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul.” (CBR10 Bingo)

August 26, 2018 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

In order to pace myself I read the Inspector Gamache books in the season or month they are set and it has been eight long months since I last visited the greater environs of Three Pines. Book nine, How the Light Gets In, had a feeling of finality to it, of bringing together the various storylines and setting a new normal for our characters. I was unsure what I should expect when it finally came time to read The Long Way Home, what would life […]

And she can hear, louder than the quaking leaves, which side will lose by winning

CBR10 BINGO: So Shiny! I have been sitting on this review for a while. It is always more difficult for me to write reviews for books that really move me. This is a meaty book full of WORDS and IDEAS and large number of characters with story lines that need to be followed.  I would classify this in what I think of as “epic”. It is deeply character driven and  I was instantly invested in the characters. If an author can get me to do […]

45 in 140

One of the greatest books of all time!  I laughed. I cried. I made my husband read it.  I will be gifting a copy to everyone I know.  Winter Solstice Holiday of Choice shopping done! I had no idea, but in 2017, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah opened up a museum near Trump Tower featuring a compilation of some of the 45th President’s most famous (read” notorious, peculiar, insane) tweets.  Then in 2018, luckily for those of us who missed the exhibit or don’t […]

Hungry for Love, Ready to Drown

August 25, 2018 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

When I need a new book to read, I generally go to my library’s website and see what I have on my TBR list, and what from that list is available to check out. Sometimes I put a lot of thought into it, and other times I’ll just grab something that sounds okay. Such was the case with The Stranger Game, and it was just about exactly what I thought it might be–okay. When she was 11, Nico’s older sister Sarah, who was 15 at […]

Everything is Worth it, After All

August 25, 2018 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

Louise Penny has been taking me on quite the rollercoaster with these last few books, but How the Light Gets In feels like my favorite part of the ride: the end. I know there are still several books left in the Inspector Gamache series but I think it may be awhile until I come back to them, because this one made me feel completely satisfied with everyone’s trajectory. How the Light Gets In tells two stories: Inspector Gamache is solving the murder of an elderly […]
