I’m Annoyed You All Made Me Read This (CBR10 BINGO)

August 30, 2018 by ASKReviews 13 Comments

CBR 10 BINGO Square: #CANNONBOOKCLUB Best for: Others seem to like this, and I don’t want to insult them or their taste, so I’ll just say — I’m not sure who it’s best for, but it sure as shit isn’t me. In a nutshell: The lives of loathsome men and superfluous women intertwine in a weak, ridiculous, and boring novel. Worth quoting: Nothing. Nothing is worth quoting, unless it’s in an effort to point out how sexist and / or racist Mr. Ferguson’s writing comes […]

Elementary, my dear…self.

August 29, 2018 by Jake 1 Comment

Read as part of CBR10 Bingo: Off a list. https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/tip-sheet/article/75892-the-most-anticipated-books-of-spring-2018.html This book should not have worked. A mystery writer inserting their self as a character is bad enough; most detectives are ancillaries for their creators as is. And my personal track record of the-creator-as-character is not good, though it’s limited to Stephen King’s appearance in his Dark Tower series. Yet it does work, at least well enough, because Anthony Horowitz is such a compelling writer. I discovered Horowitz earlier this year with his superb Magpie Murders book. Later, I found […]

I Related to This One So Much (CBR10 BINGO)

August 29, 2018 by ASKReviews 3 Comments

CBR 10 BINGO Square: Cover Art Best for: Anyone looking for a quick read that is linear but written in a slightly different style. In a nutshell: Claire has quit her job without another lined up, in an effort to find something she wants to do. Worth quoting: “When I had a job, I used to fantasize about what I’d do if I didn’t have to work anymore. Go to the gym every day, get really fit, train for a marathon perhaps. Finish Ulysses, and […]

Potentially Interesting Collection Diminished by Bad Choices on Part of the Reader

August 29, 2018 by Jen K 1 Comment

Bingo Square: Birthday This was a very frustrating read for me, and it is entirely due to the fact that I chose the wrong platform to enjoy this book.  When I popped up as a daily deal in Audible, I jumped at it with little analysis because I have always thought I need to read more Ursula K. LeGuin.  I vaguely knew it was an essay collection and thought it would be interesting to hear her thoughts on various subjects.  The problem is that it […]

Be careful who you think your friends are

The book was better?… cbr10bingo So I literally picked up this book from the library because I saw the trailer for the movie.  It couldn’t have fit better into cbr10 bingo if I tried!  I’m someone who likes to read the book before watching the movie or TV show, so there are probably a lot of these that could fit this category. Looking at some stills from the movie and reading a little about it (today after I’m done reading the book), it looks like […]

BINGO! Or Rose becomes a Real Girl and hates it.

August 29, 2018 by melanir 2 Comments

Those of you who pay attention to my reviews (and I’m not saying you should) really shouldn’t be surprised that my So Shiny slot will be a book by Seanan McGuire. I tend to read her books either on their release date, or shortly thereafter. Her books are always, always pre-order status for me (less so the books written under Mira Grant, and I’m not sure why but they just don’t appeal to me in quite the same way). This one took me a little […]
