All Those Seafood Descriptions Sure Sound Tasty To Me!

August 31, 2018 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

Continuing with my intake of pirate-themed books and tv this year, we have Cinnamon and Gunpowder! A delicious (haha) and fun story from the point of view of a master chef named Owen in the 1800s who is kidnapped by an infamous pirate captain known as Mad Hannah Mabbot: Mabbot has killed Owen’s previous employer, and takes him on to her ship with the intention of making him prepare for her a delicious meal every Sunday. From this basic premise we see Owen struggle to […]

Do not shame me for knowledge that has been denied me.

August 31, 2018 by melanir 2 Comments

This was a hard book to finish, and I’m not sure why I insisted on completing it as I really have no problem abandoning books halfway through. I did persevere though, and I think I’m glad I did? I ended up liking the book more then I thought I was going to, but I’m not sure if it was worth the slog. The book was introduced to me on Abigail Nussbaum’s blog Asking the Wrong Questions. I’ve found quite few books I’ve enjoyed through her […]

“A Canadian kind of ‘eh?’ rather than a Yorkshire one”

August 30, 2018 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Home, Something, Home Ruby Lennox narrates the story of her life from the moment of conception – “I exist!” and invites the reader into her family. There’s cold matriarch Bunty, barely there father George, oldest sister Patricia (not much of a sense of humour), and attention-seeking middle child, Gillian. Along with this main story there are ‘footnotes’, chapters that follow Ruby’s that add a little more history and backstory to her family, often centred on specific events or objects (a button in a […]

Turns out astronauts are massive nerds

August 30, 2018 by tillie Leave a Comment

Every child grows up wanting to be an astronaut, but few people ever succeed. Most people abandon the dream quite organically, but I think everybody wonders sometimes what it’s like out there. Mike Massimino’s dreams of space were first ignited when he watched Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. This book covers his journey from small kid, to university, to NASA. It’s filled with loads of obstacles, he flunks exams, his application is rejected twice before he makes it through only to fall short […]

Unsurprising, the book was better (CBR10 Bingo)

August 30, 2018 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

“Backlog” is in the row I’m working on for CBR10bingo and the rule is it must have been on your TBR pile for at least a year, or the oldest book on your list.  “This is easy!  I have at least half a shelf of books from 2013 that I haven’t read yet.”  Then I thought a little more and realized that I have an even older book, The Hunger Games.  When the book trilogy was being released everyone was raving and I was all, “I’ll […]

It is impossible. But it is not ridiculous.

August 30, 2018 by melanir Leave a Comment

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a 2010 Newbery Honor Book, meaning it was nominated for the award but lost to When You Reach Me. It fills the Snubbed slot on my bingo card for that reason. And guys, I um… I think it’s a better book then When You Reach Me. I read and reviewed When You Reach Me earlier this year, and while I thought it was fine I didn’t love it. And it might be because this book hits me where […]
