This little book is not what I was expecting. I’m not sure *what* I was expecting, actually, but it took me a pretty long time to get into this. When I finally did, though, I was glad I pushed through. Not quite sure how to describe this. It’s set in an unnamed city in an unnamed country, where nobles live up on the Hill in the city, and poor people and criminals live in Riverside. Both places have complicated and very strict rules of conduct, […]
“How could he think his way out of the problem when the problem was the way he thought . . .” #CBRBingo
“Everything was under control. No, he mustn’t think about it, or indeed about anything, and especially not about heroin, because heroin was the only thing that stopped him scampering around in a hamster’s wheel of unanswerable questions. Heroin was the cavalry. Heroin was the missing chair leg, made with such precision that matched every splinter of the break. Heroin landed purring at the base of his skull, and wrapped itself darkly around his nervous system, like a black cat curling up on its favorite cushion. […]
Fall in love whenever you can
Bingo square: Cannonballer Says! Caitlin_D’s review is here. In the 1600s, Maria Owens fell in love with the wrong man. Left desolate and with child, her line was doomed by her curse – that those who fall in love with an Owens will be ruined. Siblings Franny, Jet and Vincent come of age in the 1960s, hardly aware of their heritage – that they come from a long line of witches. But they know they are different, and they thwart their mother’s rules: No walking […]
Abundantly tedious
This was a book I 100% only read because of bingo. I’m not sure it would have crossed my radar to read otherwise, what with the plethora of material out there. So there’s that. If you’re tempted to go for it, let me from the get-go recommend the audio book. It’s read by Tim Curry, y’all. That’s right. Dr. Frankenfurter, Long John Silver, is there narrating your Jules Verne. It’s wonderful. And it’s perfect for some 1.25x speed. When I went to look for an […]
My Wife and I Could’ve Read Something More Interesting
Read this as part of CBR10Bingo: Two heads are better than one. Reviewing this one with my wife. I didn’t know until after I finished this that the book itself was a re-written teleplay from the show. Had I known that, I probably would have held off on reading it for awhile because you can see the proverbial glue and scotch tape that held this together and it’s not pretty. I appreciated the female detective navigating layers of patriarchy to try and solve the case. […]
CBR Bingo- Delicious
I knew as soon as I saw this category that I wanted to read internet icon Chrissy Teigan’s cookbook Cravings for this particular square but I struggled with this review for weeks… How does one properly review a cookbook? She cooks! My initial plan was to drag my parents over for a hearty meal of John’s fried chicken, garlic smashed potatoes and roasted carrots but those plans turned into my mother coming over for brunch this weekend and my tackling of Chrissy’s dutch baby pancake and cheesy cheeseless […]
