My first (almost) introduction to Pratchett, and it was a great one (Bingo Square: White Whale)

October 20, 2018 by Aquillia 3 Comments

I recently decided to get back into audiobooks to listen to while going to the gym. The gym is not my idea of fun, so I wanted something that would be–well, fun! I’ve been meaning to read Pratchett for years now, having only read (and loved) Good Omens before this. Guards! Guards! was one of the ones people recommended starting with. Luckily the audiobook was available on my library’s Overdrive, so I downloaded and gave it a chance. The story opens with the Grand Master of […]

I feel let-down (thank godtopus this isn’t my Cannonball book) BINGO #2

October 18, 2018 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

I had such hopes for this one. I have a noted love of Craig Ferguson. I read and enjoyed his autobiography American On Purpose during my first Cannonball Read. Ferguson in this debut is a version of creepy but lovable, which is a combination that worked very well for me in his stint as host of The Late Late Show and works less well in this book. I’m still struggling to wrap my head around what I read and what the heck he was after, […]

This Book Feels So Incredibly Lonely

October 18, 2018 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

I’m at a bit of a loss as to what my true feelings are on The Goldfinch… at first I had a hard time getting into it (and I thought, “how many pages are there in this brick of a novel?”), but then the majority of the rest flew by and I was captivated as to where it would go next, with only a few patches here and there where my interest wavered, only to then stall out within the last couple of sections and […]

Maybe It’s Better in the Original French? (CBR10 BINGO)

October 18, 2018 by ASKReviews 2 Comments

CBR 10 BINGO Square: Brain Candy Best for: People interested in some fun home and beauty tips (but only if you skip the section related to health and food, because it is awful). If you’re really interested in a fun minimalism book, just get the Marie Kondo one. In a nutshell: French author has ideas on how to live a minimalistic life, mostly borrowed from her view of Japanese culture. Worth quoting: “Life is far more enjoyable when we cultivate the habit of losing ourselves […]

A lovely old-fashioned fantasy for kids (Bingo Square: Birthday!)

October 18, 2018 by Aquillia Leave a Comment

A little while ago, I read Diana Wynne Jones’ Howl’s Moving Castle after seeing the Miyazaki film. It was pretty much nothing like the film, but I adored it anyway. So I picked out Castle in the Air on my Overdrive app for a light read, expecting more of the adventures of Sophie and Howl. It wasn’t quite what I expected either, but was still a sweet, lovely story perfect for a kids (or, y’know, any adult). Sophie and Howl don’t feature much until the end, for Castle […]

It’s Not You, It’s Me: It Was Good, It Was Intricate But I Just Didn’t Love It

October 18, 2018 by Jen K 3 Comments

Bingo Square (Round 2): Listicles (The Most Anticipated Book of Fall 2018) I never got into the habit of paying attention to release dates for most novels. Back in the day, I would find out a new novel from a beloved author was being released because I would find it on the “New Releases” display of the local Barnes and Noble – with some notable exceptions for very high profile novels.  With the transition to digital books, it’s been a bit harder for me to pay […]
