cbr10bingo… Two heads are better than one Even though it’s called two heads are better than one, I went with three heads. I enlisted the help of my two nieces. Olivia is eight and Nora is six. They’re awesome, and they love dogs, and they love reading. This review is both happy and sad. We read this book because I lost my little guy Ernie this spring. It was the hardest thing I’ve had to go through in a long long time. He was a […]
“Whatever you choose, you can rest assured knowing that you have a proverb to back you up.”
An Apple a Day is a book of proverbs. It’s not a proverb dictionary, rather it is looking at proverbs in relation to their relevance today. The introduction goes through the progression of some proverbs. They can start out being quotes, like in Shakespeare or the Bible, and then be a proverb, and then if overused can become a cliché. Here are some of my favorite ones, usually due to some of the extra bits the author included. So a lot of quotes. “A […]
Definitely not my wheelhouse, but thought-provoking nonetheless (BINGO finally!)
Brave New World fills the Not My Wheelhouse square, which means… BINGO! At last! I didn’t actually know that much about Brave New World when I decided to read it (well, listen to the audiobook). I think I expected it to be more about struggling to bring down a dystopian system rather than struggling (or not) within a dystopian system. I didn’t expect a satire, and I didn’t really expect the end to be so hopeless. In a way, the satire aspect makes it even less my wheelhouse than I […]
Welcome to my first ever 1-star review
CBR10 Bingo: Home, Something, Home (Janet Evanovich is from my home state of New Jersey, where the action in this novel also takes place.) I tend to be fairly generous in my reviews, with most of them falling in the 3- to 4-star range. Even if I don’t particularly care for a book, I appreciate that an individual has put herself out there and offered up something she created for the world to enjoy, and that deserves respect. Sometimes the process of writing a review calls my […]
That wasn’t on the menu
You guys, my “delicious” bingo square was supposed to be about food. I love reading about food – cooking, restaurants, food culture, the science of taste – it’s all catnip to me. My coworkers mock me. This was supposed to be an automatic good review. It’s written by Michael Pollan. It’s in the food writing section. It’s subtitled “a natural history of four meals.” So where’s the food writing? I feel like the reader expecting Moby Dick to be an action tale and getting […]
Don’t let this happen. Go out and vote!
Holy crap this is depressing. And terrifying. We have our main character, Winston, who’s 39. He starts off by doing a forbidden thing: writing in a diary. He is terrified that the Thought Police will find him and kill him, or if not that then send him to 25 years of hard labor. The Thought Police can find you anywhere. There are screens that are constantly on playing propaganda news and military music and whatever else they want the people to see, and the Thought […]
