This book is set in the late 1920s in Britain, the era of the Bright Young Things who were rich and titled and carefree. Our heroine, Rachel Woodley, however is none of those things. At the start of the book, she is working as a governess to a trio of children in Paris and receives a telegram informing her that her mother is at death’s door. Due to the fact she rebuffed the advances of one of her co-workers, he delayed passing along the telegram […]
…so much more than that.
There were 13 reviews posted of this book in CBR9. There isn’t much more I can say about this book that hasn’t already been said by all of those wonderful reviewers here. While my life experience could not be farther from Starr Carter’s, I’m thankful to Angie Thomas for giving me the opportunity to spend some time with her. The basic premise of the story has been discussed at length here and just about everywhere, so I’ll just list some of the things that will stay […]
Stay Out of the Woods!
In reading a few of Ruth Ware’s books, I’ve learned that either I’m a genius or her plot twists can be seen a mile away. In this case, I guessed it when I was reading the synopsis on Amazon. But…hear me out, Ruth Ware’s writing is pretty tight and you’re still drawn in even though you’re going to know what’s going to happen. This wasn’t one of my favorites of hers because I thought that the last 1/3 of the book was blah. The building […]
Reading this book was a bit of a chore. Not because N.K. Jemison’s work isn’t amazing, but because I checked it out as an ebook from my library, not realizing that I couldn’t renew it if other people had it on hold and it would be automatically returned before I could finish it. I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as I did its predecessor, The Fifth Season, but it is still an intense read that gives us a deeper understanding of Essun, the main […]
She had me at Dolly Parton.
Dumplin’, whose real name is Willowdean, is a smart, kind, capable, funny, and fat (her term) 16-year-old in small-town Texas. Being sixteen is sucky enough, am I right?!, but the “fat” part causes even more trouble than one would expect for Dumplin’ since her mom is the local pageant queen-turned-pageant director, still living on her own pageant days, staying thin to fit in a 30-year-old dress. She was herself once Miss Teen Blue Bonnet and you better believe that’s a big effin’ deal in Clover […]
thought-provoking, but this one’s not for me
Hello! This one’s hard for me to review, and I haven’t figured out why yet. The short story is this: a woman whose husband was killed by Muslim extremists has a short rendezvous with a married Muslim man she meets under run-of-the-mill circumstances (some kind of trade show, I think?). As I said, that’s the very short story, and if I add too much more I’ll be editorializing rather than summarizing. So: here are a few things I thought while reading it or upon reflection… […]
