My latest writing project is of a spooky nature, so I thought I might get a little inspiration from one of my favorite horror movies, Rosemary’s Baby. It didn’t disappoint and holds up after many viewings. Mia Farrow is having a tough trimester in Rosemary’s Baby After the umpteenth time of watching poor Mia Farrow find out what was really behind her linen closet, I got to wondering about the source material. A trip to the library resulted in a bag full of Ira Levin thrillers: Rosemary’s […]
Through the eyes of a mouse
Having just finished a non-fiction work about evolution, I decided to bring it down a notch and read something very different, but still somewhat related. Whitefoot: A Story from the Center of the World is a lovely children’s book about a few days in the life of a white-footed mouse (whom we call Whitefoot, since we don’t know her real name in Mouse language). Author Wendell Berry writes with an elegant simplicity that is sweet without being syrupy. Of the heroine, he writes, “In comparison […]
Delightful, feel-good space opera
A closed and common orbit is the sequel to The Long way to a Small Angry Planet, so… A Closed and Common Orbit follows Lovelace the AI after she’s been downloaded into a kit resembling a human body. Pepper takes care of her and brings her back to her home planet. Lovelace changes her name to Sidra, a human-name, and tries to adjust to life with different senses in a strange place. She is no longer a ship with a camera in every room, […]
“Stand up and do better.
Hoo boy! This 1200 page tome is going to be a doozy to try to review without spoiling but I’ll give it the old college try. Brandon Sanderson’s third installment of the Stormlight Archive is full of its share of world building, plot twists and some honest to goodness character development. I’ll try to keep things vague and broad but A LOT happens in this book. *some spoilers for the first two books ahead* Oathbringer picks up shortly after the events of Words of […]
A Scot and his wolf return home
This is another book with a long lost hero, though in this case it was his own choice to disappear. This book, third in the No Ordinary Hero series by Suzanne Enoch, is set in Scotland where Callum MacCreath discovers that his older brother Ian, Earl of Geiry, is set to marry Rebecca, a childhood friend. While Callum isn’t exactly ready to settle down himself, he realizes that he wants Rebecca and confronts her about it. A family fight ensues, and Callum finds himself shunned […]
Back from the dead, the earl seeks vengeance
This book is the latest in the Rules for the Reckless series, though it’s very easy to read as a stand alone. It is linked somewhat to Ms Duran’s debut book, The Duke of Shadows, which I read last year but completely forgot about for the most part until the end of this one. So whether that’s good or bad, I’m not sure, take it as you will. This is the tale of Liam Devaliant, Earl of Lockwood, who mysteriously disappeared on his wedding night […]
