Rocks, frocks, and a footprint in a box

A Week to be Wicked by Tessa Dare

April 15, 2018 by alphabootoo 1 Comment

I finally found a romance novel that I really enjoyed. Part of that may be because I am exhausted and stressed and therefore primed for fluffy fare but nonetheless I would happily read this one again. A Week to be Wicked by Tessa Dare isn’t so much a historical romance as an alternate universe romance because I needed a major suspension of disbelief for a significant chunk of the storyline. But that actually made it a little more fun for me – I relish fantasy […]

Paranormal fantasy that should appeal to Supernatural fans

April 15, 2018 by Malin 5 Comments

From Goodreads, because I’m really far behind on my reviews, and it’s a good summary of the book: Ghoulies. Ghosties. Long-legged beasties. Things that go bump in the night…the Price family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world, working to protect them from humanity – and humanity from them. Enter Verity Price. Despite being trained from birth as a cryptozoologist, she’d rather dance a tango than tangle with a demon, and is spending a year in Manhattan while she pursues her career in […]

A fun enough read, but it was too short

April 15, 2018 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Georgiana “Georgie” Watkins is a wealthy heiress and socialite It-girl who usually comes home from her nights out around 5am, always making sure to bring donuts for the building staff before she retires to bed. While living a life of leisure and partying at night and planning charity fundraisers by day used to be diverting enough, Georgie is getting restless and bored, and starting to consider taking her dad up on one of his many job offers. Contrary to what some people think, […]

It’s the end of the world as we know it….

April 14, 2018 by CatOnMyHead 2 Comments

In Toronto, Ontario paramedic-in-training Jeevan Chaudhary is sitting in the audience watching a production of King Lear when the lead suddenly drops dead onstage. Unable to save him, Chaudhary comforts a young actress as the body is taken away. This is Year Zero. In Year Twenty, Kirsten Raymonde is a member of the Travelling Symphony – a group of actors and musicians who travel around the Great Lakes performing classical music and Shakespeare. The colonies they visit sprung up after the Georgia Flu wiped out […]

Five men, two boats, two dogs, and a troublesome cat.

April 14, 2018 by alphabootoo 4 Comments

I came across Connie Willis’ novel To Say Nothing of the Dog and it sounded like something I would enjoy, but figured I had best read Jerome K Jerome’s classic Three Men in a Boat first as it is the story that Willis riffs off of for her own. While Three Men in a Boat was amusing, I grew tired of it and had to force myself to slog through to get to the end. I think I would have enjoyed it more when I […]

Yup, still holds up

This is a re-read, and my original review for this book can be found here. As with the other Milans I’ve been revisiting, I wanted to listen to this in audio, but discovered, to my dismay that it wasn’t narrated by Polly Lee, who did the first two books in The Turner series, but Nicole Quinn, whose voice just did NOT work for me. I tried to warm to her throughout the first chapter, but gave up and returned the audio. Unraveled is my favourite book in this trilogy […]
