This was a lovely and well-written story that I REALLY didn’t like.

May 13, 2018 by scootsa1000 Leave a Comment

This book was everywhere last year. Everyone I knew was reading it for book clubs and raving about it. One of my book clubs finally chose it for our April pick, and I’m just finishing up (its long!). The verdict in my book club: Most did not finish. One finished and hated it. One finished and put it in her top 5 books of all time. And what about me? I was just annoyed. This is a nice story for the most part. Amor Towles […]

Good Read for Summer

May 12, 2018 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

I recommend Cinnamon and Gunpowder for your “beach reads” list this summer. It features kidnapping, pirates, adventure and battle on the high seas with a twist. The pirate who does the kidnapping and spreads terror throughout the British Empire is a woman — Mad Hannah Mabbot, a fearless captain with a bounty on her head. Our narrator is a chef — Owen Wedgwood, kidnapped from Lord Ramsey’s home in August of 1819 when Hannah arrives unexpectedly and kills Ramsey right before his eyes. Owen tries […]

Snogging means kissing

May 12, 2018 by tillie 5 Comments

This book is a cultural institution in England. It was recommended to me so when I found it at my local tesco’s I was like, yeah, might as well. While I was reading it, every woman was like “omg I totally remember reading that when I was fourteen.” There’s even a movie! Maybe I would have liked it better if I was fourteen. Angus, thongs, and full-frontal snogging is a year in Georgia’s life featuring her crazy cat, and her quest to snog Sex God, […]

It Ain’t A Party Until Someone Loses An Eye…OR so I’ve heard…

May 10, 2018 by Melina 2 Comments

One of my favorite books is the Ice Storm.  It’s one of the saddest books ever and the impending storm builds as does the intense feeling that something awful is going to happen and the there’s no way to save the characters from themselves or their decisions. The book is bleak as hell and most people hate it because of that, but the writing and the tension are truly amazing.  When I read the little blurb from Book Bub yesterday about The Party, I got […]

This fire left me feeling tepid

May 9, 2018 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

I don’t normally take advice from the interwebs, but when I took a short “what should you read next quiz” that was posted to the CBR book chat page, the resulting recommendation intrigued me. Home Fire was described as a retelling of Antigone set in modern-day London. I haven’t read any Greek tragedy since high school, so I thought this could make an interesting study, to compare the classic with the modern. I have to confess, Greek tragedies were never my thing. I ate up all manner […]

I really wanna meet a dragon now.

May 9, 2018 by tillie 2 Comments

“If women had power what would men be, but women who can’t bear children?” The earthsea quartet is four books that all follow Ged, known as Sparrowhawk, from his first feeble steps into magic, through his prideful youth, to a brave adulthood and then finally in his final years as Archmage of the wizard school on the island on Roke. “But it is one thing to read about dragons and another to meet them. The Wizard of the Earthsea is the first book were we […]
