It took me 11 years to finally read it. Worth it.

Christopher likes to go walking at nighttime where the world is quiet. There are no people to overwhelm him and he can take his time to see all the things, but one night when he goes out he finds his neighbour’s dog dead, killed with a pitchfork. Christopher likes logic and he likes dogs, so he decides to become a detective and figure out who killed the dog. His father is not pleased by this and forbids Christopher to investigate, but for the first time […]

Dreamy art plus a good science fiction story – not such a bad find

August 9, 2018 by llp 1 Comment

Happy QuarterCannonball to me! I was in the library to pick up a the ten ton Oathbringer, and happened across this graphic novel I had not heard of previously. In truth, it’s Colleen Doran’s name that caught my attention first – she is very talented, able to draw and paint in many different styles, and has interesting discussions about art and artists and women in the graphic novel business on Twitter. Warren Ellis of Transmetropolitan fame is good too, though. The foreword to the novel […]

Look! Someone has a brain like me!

August 8, 2018 by tillie 1 Comment

The Chinese believe that before you can conquer a beast, you must first make it beautiful” Sarah Wilson has been diagnosed over the years, everything from anxiety to depression to bipolar. She’s been on medication, off-medication, happy and functional, manic and gone and suicidal. This is a book for people who suffer from what she refers to as anxiety, but covers any sort of mental health issue where you feel like your brain doesn’t mesh with life. This book is less a treatise on how […]

“I’m basically your resident fat Slytherin Rory Gilmore.”

August 7, 2018 by Caitycat 1 Comment

I’m using this review to fill my Birthday! square, as Becky Albertalli’s birthday is November 17th. “Imagine going about your day knowing someone’s carrying you in their mind. That has to be the best part of being in love- the feeling of having a home in some else’s brain…” I loved Simon Vs. the Homosapien Agenda and The Upside of Unrequited, so of course I wanted to read Albertalli’s newest book. Leah on the Offbeat is more of a direct sequel to Simon, as Upside […]

History develops. Art stands still

August 7, 2018 by tillie 2 Comments

“Good writing can only be learned from good writing.” This book is a collection of lectures that Forster gave at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1927. It grabs you immediately as he dismisses temporality and time periods in the discussion of the merits of novels and, instead, places all writers in the same room writing from some sort of shared humanity. “We may say that History develops, Art stands still” From that he sets out to deconstruct the novel, discussing it not as a set or […]

#CBR10Bingo: White Whale – The Truth About Forever

August 7, 2018 by Malin 2 Comments

#CBR10Bingo: White Whale (on my TBR-list for more years than I can count) Macy used to love running and was very good at it, until one morning, her father (and coach) had a heart attack, and now, Macy doesn’t do that anymore. Instead, she keeps her life strictly regimented and works very hard at her school work, so as to not have to think too hard about her feelings. This summer, her boyfriend Jason is going away to “brain camp” and she will fill in for […]
