The Legacy, by John Coyne, is a mixture of an Agatha Christie whodunnit, as members of a house party are knocked off one by one, and an occult thriller. It’s not always clear how much of the menace is due to dark magic or just plain old greed, as six people have been elected to inherit a legacy — of vast wealth, property, and possibly, supernatural power. Coyne wrote the novel as a tie-in to the successful film starring Katharine Ross and Sam Elliot (and […]
But what of Barry the swim instructor? Does he get a happy ending?
A few years ago (I don’t know…maybe 2007?), back when I was addicted to watching Craig Ferguson’s Late Night show, he had an interesting episode in which he sat and talked to his friend Stephen Fry. No monologue, no questions on cards, no skits, no dancing horse. Just a conversation between old friends. It was fascinating. They talked about all sorts of stuff, but what I remember most was their discussion about writing fiction. Fry had several books, their good friend Hugh Laurie had just […]
Between the Bridge and OH GOD KILL ME PLEASE KILL ME NOW
CBR10Bingo: CannonBookClub (Or should I say CBR10BINGOBINGOBINGO, because that’s a triple for me!) AlabamaPink may be our warrior queen, but she must also have been a damn saint for all of the sins she overlooked in her review of this book. She was (obviously) a far better person than I, because I just couldn’t get past all of the awfulness to say anything constructive. The good: I stopped caring after page 21 when he makes a very distasteful joke about suicide, so I skimmed through […]
Bad blood carries. Bad blood comes out.
CBR10Bingo: The Book Was Better? This was another square I struggled to fill, until a flash of inspiration hit me. I remembered that I had bought Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden on a whim several months ago but never actually watched it, giving me the perfect excuse to buy and read Fingersmith by Sarah Waters and then finally watch the film. Done and done. Sue was born in a cramped house of thieves and orphaned when her mother was hanged for murder. Mrs. Sucksby has raised […]
I want to own this book
I am not even sure I follow Chrissy Teigen on Twitter, but everything I have read indicates she is bright, witty and compassionate. Plus, I have heard a lot of positive buzz about all the food she makes, and I was in the mood for some new comfort food recipes. Cravings it was to be for this particular bingo square. So, thank you interlibrary loan for bringing me this delightful book! My spouse is allergic to poultry, so we don’t generally eat it at home. […]
This book is a book I have read, yup
I don’t know much about Craig Ferguson, but I know he is is something of a favourite with my people, and his novel was centre square in CBR10 Bingo , so here we are. This book is billed as “Bawdy, joyous, messy, hysterically funny, and guaranteed to offend regardless of religion, race, national origin, sexual orientation, or profession…” on Amazon.ca. Maybe I am just not in the mood for books that are guaranteed to offend. Maybe I am not inclined to find a book with […]
