Well, this was an odd little book. As per the blurb: An enticing contemporary retelling of the classic story of Snow White. While the the handsome prince, the jealous queen, the beautiful girl and of course the poison all appear, Sarah Pinborough’s charming and provocative spin on the story will captivate fans of the fairy tale all over again. I was a big fan of Once Upon a Time when it came out, with it’s unique view of fairy tale characters so I thought it […]
The DODO Doorstopper
‘My name is Melisande Stokes and this is my story. I am writing in July 1851 (Common Era, or – let’s face it – Anno Domini) in the guest chamber of a middle-class home in Kensington, London, England. But I am not a native of this place or time. In fact, I am quite fucking desperate to get out of here.’ Having never read anything by Nicole Galland before, I may be speculating, but her influence on Neal Stephenson’s infodump tendencies seems to be a positive […]
Epic translation of The Odyssey
It has been many a year since I’ve read any of the Greek classics. I remember reading some plays back in high school (early 1980s), but I’m not sure I ever read the entirety of Homer’s Odyssey, and if I did, I most likely didn’t find much enjoyment in it. A classic of western literature and a staple of both literature and western civilization courses, The Odyssey tells the epic tale of a heroic Greek warrior’s 20-year quest to get home after the Trojan War. […]
I would like to drown everyone in this book in a vat of eggnog. (Featuring bonus gifs to make me feel better.)
I was super excited when I saw this at my local bookstore. One of my all-time favorite classics, modernized and gender-swapped, set at Christmas, and with a cute cover. This was going to be great. SPOILER: THIS WAS NOT GREAT. This was absolutely awful. The worst. The writing was terrible and amateurish. The plot points were forced, like they were simply following a checklist of things that Jane Austen originally wrote. Every single character was a horrible human being that I never wanted to know. […]
Insider exposé with little to no actual shocking revelations…
And Cannonball Read book #3 is done. With all the hoopla over Fire and Fury last week, I immediately added it to my reading list and powered through to finish it. For anyone somehow unaware, this is an insider look at the first (almost) year of Trump’s presidency, with some insights into the end of the campaign and the election. Based on the above-referenced hoopla, I was expecting much more in the way of explosive revelations. Instead, it ended up being a gossipy confirmation of […]
Half a War – only kept me half engaged
In my review for Half the World, book two in the series, I said, “The two can’t stop worrying at each other and their eventual romance, with standard misunderstanding, is pretty predictable. Both characters have good arcs and come to happy endings, I just wasn’t as interested in their perspective of world events as I had Yarvi’s. While I am interested in the events occurring around the Shattered Sea, and how Father Yarvi and Gettland will get through the eventual war that is coming, I hope that […]
