I’ve read a lot of historical romance over the years, and this book was so much more than I was expecting! It’s not the typical tale, and maybe the romance doesn’t fit the mold of the traditional genre but I devoured this in very short order and wanted more. Thank you narfna for your wonderful reviews of this series that prompted me to pick this up. This is book one in the Blackshear family saga, and tells the tale of Martha Russell, who is newly […]
Seeing comes before words.
I picked up this book for a multitude of reasons. Mainly because the cover was brilliant, the physical size of the book is perfect for twisting in your hands and it’s beautiful enough that I wanted to be seen with it. The first page is remarkable. It starts with one sentence “Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it speaks.” And then whitespace. I’m such a sucker for whitespace. This book should have had more whitespace. It’s set in a bold Univers […]
Better Than Being There
The number one thing I learned from How To Be A Tudor, by charming and intelligent historian Ruth Goodman, is that I’m glad I’m not a Tudor.
Traitors, Talents, and Spies
After finishing the disappointing Half a War I was scanning my shelves and the spine of this book, emblazoned with the flag of Great Britain, jumped out at me. At the Table of Wolves by Kay Kenyon. The cover has a WWII militaristic look, with the tagline “Traitors, Talents, Spies: Let the games begin”. It had been the speculative fiction pick of the month last year at my favorite bookstore. I knew nothing about it but the store’s recommendation was enough for me. Kay Kenyon has reimagined a post […]
We need to talk about Haruki
My other possible title for this review was “Now I know how to quit you”. You see, I have a long, complicated relationship with Murakami. I read Wind-Up Bird Chronicle something like thirteen years ago. I devoured that book. It was weird and fun and compelling. And deeply unsatisfying. Much like his other books, the whole is far less than the sum of its parts. And yet, I keep reading more. I’m honestly not sure why, when there are so many books to read in this way-too-short […]
It Deserves a Better Description than “Nigerian Harry Potter”
When I saw Akata Witch in Overdrive, it was dubbed the “Nigerian Harry Potter“. I had always been a fan of the Harry Potter movies, but didn’t care enough about the writing in the actual books. So I never truly appreciated what this could really mean to a fan of the series. But I knew enough about it to be intrigued and gave it a try. The book is very similar to Harry Potter in a couple of ways. The main character is Sunny, an albino African-American who is bright […]
