The book that made me like my name

November 28, 2018 by tillie Leave a Comment

Matilda is a unique child. By the time she is three she has taught herself to read by studying newspapers around the house. Every day when her mom leaves for bingo Matilda walks to the library and reads anything in sight. Her parents are neglectful and abusive, but Matilda gets revenge by thinking up clever pranks involving super glue or ghosts and parrots. When she starts school her intelligence is immediately recognized which is how she gets to know Miss Honey, but also how she […]

Silence of the lambs anyone??

November 28, 2018 by KB Leave a Comment

A fascinating book around profiling serial rapists and murderers. This book follows John as he joins the FBI and initiates the concept of profiling criminals in an attempt to help catch future criminals. The book looks at the introduction of this technique purely through John’s interest in how and why serial offenders commit the crimes they do. Despite John providing details of various crimes in a way of illustrating how he “gets into the minds” of the criminals, this book is not overly gruesome. […]

Is this a dagger I see before me?

Another great Jo Nesbo book. This is not part of the Harry Hole series (which I absolutely love), this is more of a stand alone book. I enjoyed this book for a few reasons. Firstly, Macbeth is my all time favourite Shakespeare text. So I am always happy to read modern adaptations. Jo has done a remarkable job of making this a modern story. He has kept all of the main story lines, but adapted it to a police setting. The story begins with […]

Snubbed and Bingo #3!

November 27, 2018 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

cbr10bingo Snubbed Christophe Chaboute’s graphic novel adaptation of Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick was nominated for a 2018 Eisner Award for Best Adaptation from Another Medium. It lost to Damien Duffy and John Jennings’ adaptation of Octavia Butler’s Kindred. I’ve never had a great desire to conquer Moby Dick. It was never assigned in any of my high school or university literature classes, and frankly, the story of a crazy old sea captain trying to exact revenge on a white whale sounded weird. And then there’s […]

So many feels – CBR10Bingo: So Popular! *Bingo*

November 27, 2018 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Elaine Lui of Lainey Gossip has been figuratively yelling at me since 2013 to read Eleanor & Park.  She brings it up regularly when talking about other YA books.  It was a book I kept meaning to get around to reading but just never put in the effort of getting my hands on a copy.  When I realized it was an option for the So Popular! bingo square, it seemed fated that I would finally read Eleanor & Par,k and complete my second bingo in the process. I could not […]

Better late than never – Cbr10bingo: Cannonball Book Club

November 26, 2018 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

A little over a week ago I realized I was two squares short of completing a second bingo column, the book club pick and something from the So Popular! category.  My downtown library had both Between the Bridge and the River as well as Eleanor and Park, my first choice on the So Popular list, so off I went.  Due to the mixed opinions on Craig Ferguson’s book, I suspected I would not enjoy it as much as Eleanor and Park, so I decided to read it first […]
