When reading this book, I could not help but think about torture techniques that use water in drastically different ways. There’s the act of waterboarding, where you place a towel over a person’s face and then pour water on top of them. This mimics the sensation of drowning. Then there’s the Chinese water torture, where someone is strapped to a chair and a solitary drip of water falls upon a person’s forehead taking nearly hours between each drop. The drops become a stab into the […]
Identity crisis
This book was incredibly intriguing. I enjoyed the style of it being written backwards, beginning with now, then creeping back weeks or months at a time. I enjoyed the characters and what they got up to. I enjoyed slowly but surely changing my views on what was occurring. This book was written well in the ‘show don’t tell’ sense, in that with each revelation I was able to make new assumptions or beliefs around what was happening. This was done in a way that wasn’t […]
Robbing banks with a twist
Having just read “The Snowman” I was excited and impatient to read more of Jo Nesbo’s books. There are many great things about this book, but unfortunately a few things that were a little disappointing. Firstly, the characters as always are great. I absolutely love Harry Hole (the main character) and have become quite defensive of him. Automatically disliking any character that does not treat him with respect. As well as being pleased by any character that does respect him and admires him. But I […]
A beautifully written thriller
How can a suspenseful thriller be written so beautifully it is almost poetic, you ask? Well here is your answer. Jane Harper has written a book where the descriptions of the Australian outback are absolutely beautifully described. There were a number of times whilst reading this book that I needed to stop and spend a moment or two appreciating the beauty of the writing. As for the story itself, superb. A great suspense mystery that constantly had me trying to guess what might have occurred. […]
Before and After the Fire.
This book has a lot to unpack. While reading, I noted several quotes that I thought might be useful for writing the review. Looking at them now, I made note of them because each was an amazing little bundle of sentences. Some of the bundles were laugh out loud funny. Some of the bundles were eviscerating. Some were just things most of us think, don’t say out loud, but wish some one would. Eleanor Oliphant is all of these things. She is amusing without trying […]
“The only boundaries are those we create for ourselves.”
I’m going to admit something to you all that might not make me very popular around here. I grew up in Boston and lived there until my husband’s work took us to Northern Virginia in 2005. I love the Celtics. I cried when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004. And I am a massive New England Patriots fan. I don’t care that everyone who isn’t a Patriots fan ABSOLUTELY DESPISES the Patriots. They’re my team and they always have been. The fact […]
