And the worms ate into his brain

February 8, 2018 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

I would have liked to read this book over a day or two without interruption so that I could immerse myself in it. Reading it in fits and starts while I was on hold at work (I have the Kindle app downloaded to my desktop) and before bed it at night really didn’t allow me to feel the growing feeling of unease and dissociation that Margaret Atwood’s book conveys. Though I wouldn’t call it my favorite work by Ms. Atwood (Cat’s Eye wins that […]

That’s nothing like the book! And deeper lessons learned on re-reading decades later

February 8, 2018 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

When I found out Disney was adapting A Wrinkle in Time, I knew that I would read it to my daughter before the movie came out.  We recently watched the trailer but hadn’t finished the book yet.  Once the trailer finished, my daughter turned to me and said, “That’s nothing like the book!”  I started laughing and responded, “Get used to that feeling, kiddo”.  Later we talked about the challenge of adapting a written work to a visual medium and we both speculated on how Aunt Beast will […]

Wish this hadn’t sat in my TBR so long

February 6, 2018 by Dome'Loki 4 Comments

Me to my husband, “I think you’ll really like this book I’ve just started reading, The Queen of Blood.  There are these elemental spirits and they are locked in conflict with the humans.  In this kingdom, the people live in the trees.  A small village might be just one giant tree – “.  He interrupts me, “Do they get around on zip lines?” “Yeah”, I respond.  “I read that last year, good book”.  He was right, it is a good book. Renthia is made of […]

A Gilded Age mystery

February 6, 2018 by Mikki Blu 2 Comments

From New York Times bestselling author, Lauren Willig, comes this scandalous novel set in the Gilded Age, full of family secrets, affairs, and even murder. This book is a mixture of historical romance with an intriguing plot of family secrets and mystery that is very well done.  It’s set at the end of the 1800’s, in the wealthy environs of New York society where rigid rules of appearance were adhered to.  Bayard and Annabelle Van Duyvil are the glamorous couple that appear to have it […]

What Does “Surely You’re Joking Mr. Feynman” Have to Do with Leadership?

February 6, 2018 by Petre18 1 Comment

I found the book Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman by the eponymous Richard Feynman from a coworker. This list was on a reading list for a strategy or leadership class, which was an interesting topic. I knew of Richard Feynman, but never really knew too much about his work in physics or his personality. But I knew he was famous and was awarded the Nobel Prize. So I sought out to read this book to see what messages of leadership he had. What I got […]

If you’re going to judge a book by its cover, this should be the one.

As an 8-time Cannonballer, I can’t believe this is the first Leigh Bardugo book I’ve ever picked up. I think I’ve meant to read some of her stuff before…but I guess life just got in my way. I first heard about this book when the great Rainbow Rowell was raving about its utter gorgeousness on her Instagram. I had never heard the term “progressive illustrations” before, so my interest was quickly piqued. (FYI, a progressive illustration is exactly what it sounds like. In this book […]
