The Ballad of the Reluctant Hero

November 7, 2018 by lumenatrix 1 Comment

I have always loved ancient myths, I read every book of myths from every single part of the world I could get my hands on as a kid. Being that I grew up in the Western World this mostly meant Greek Myths. While I could find a couple Chinese, and Korean, and Indian myth books in my local libraries, and there were several on Norse and Celtic mythology as well, all of these were far outnumbered by the books of Greek and Roman myths and […]

Life is Simple, Except When it Isn’t.

This book is amazing. I love this book. I am so glad I stumbled across this looking for something to fill up my bingo card. Magical realism is one of my absolute favorite story telling devices when it is done well, and this is such a perfect example of what it can really do. This is the story of Jojo’s family. Jojo is a thirteen-year-old mixed race boy growing up in the current day South and straddling that realm in between boyhood and adulthood. He […]

Emma Thompson is a goddess and should always be treated as such. Oh, and BINGO.

October 30, 2018 by scootsa1000 4 Comments

I’ve read Emma a few times before, and have read several re-imaginings and retellings as well. I’ve seen at least four adaptations (Mark Strong as Mr. Knightley…Jonny Lee Miller as Mr. Knightely…the web series made by the folks who did The Lizzie Bennett Diaries…and of course, the GOOP version), and always thought I preferred the movie to the book. I mean, come on. Jeremy Northam gave so much beautiful side-eye to Goop in that movie. And then, low and behold, Audible gifted me with the Emma […]

Oh! To be sixteen once again

October 9, 2018 by getoffmylawnn 2 Comments

As a 16 yo, I didn’t experience a first love. A couple of crushes, but none of them were anything more than an occasional glance in the lift, or a quickening of pulse when they appeared in front of me. To read Rainbow Rowell describe it so minutely in normal-speak without being elaborate is a welcome peek into a world when feelings run amok, you barely understand what’s happening and yet you feel so much (so – much like my current mid-thirties, GOTCHA, dumb-ass […]

Throwback Thursday: My annual rereads of Agatha Christies

September 27, 2018 by Aquillia 7 Comments

Every year, I read at least one Christie I haven’t read for a while. Sometimes I even forget the murderer (until about halfway through)! This post is therefore my annual round-up of the ones I’ve read. (Annual because it’s almost October but I’m pretty sure I’m burnt out on Christie for at least several months). I didn’t read anything really brilliant, to be honest, but it was solid comfort reading during a very tumultuous summer (in which I got married, moved to a different country, worked […]

Dropping the Hammer

September 19, 2018 by lumenatrix 1 Comment

**I want to add a quick update because this is cracking me up. Ever since I posted this review, half of the ads I see on websites are in Korean. Apparently just taking the time to look up the correct names of food is enough to convince the bots you’re bilingual!**   I’m a little unsure exactly how to review a cookbook, but I’m going to take a crack at it, because this is a good one.   I first found Maangchi via her YouTube […]
