Book Roundup

December 17, 2018 by lumenatrix 1 Comment

I have a few books I’ve been putting off reviewing simply because I don’t have much to say about them. That isn’t necessarily because I didn’t like them, I just can’t come up with a lot of words for them. So, I’m going to do a bit of a “at a loss for words round up” and get these in the bank. I’ll put the link to my favorite in the Amazon link box. Little Fires Everywhere (4 Stars) by Celeste Ng Pearl and Maya […]

Bright Lights, Bay City

I went back and forth on whether to use this as “The Book Was Better” because while Netflix did turn it into a series I hadn’t watched it. Then, while it was dumping rain over the long weekend, I actually watched the series, so that assuaged my guilt and now I can write this review with a clear conscience. So. Altered Carbon. I gave this book three stars, but I honestly went back and forth on that for a while. I decided to give it […]

It’s Chaos. Be Kind.

Oh man, I am so far behind on my Bingo reviews! I’m going to try really hard to get them all in by the 30th without shortchanging the books. So, here we go. I chose this one as my “Home Something Home” book because, well, I needed to fill the square and I found a slightly sick kind of irony in a book about a serial killer falling into this category. I actually grew up probably around 5 miles or so from at least three, […]

A warm cozy blanket of a book

November 24, 2018 by llp Leave a Comment

I resolved to read something I had not read before for This Old Thing, and Goodreads gave me a list of recommended books that are over 100 years old. I picked The Scarlet Pimpernel, because it is famous and important and written by a woman. It turns out that I do not have the reading fortitude I had in university, and I just couldn’t get into it. Despite having promised myself to not do re-reads for CBR10 Bingo, I felt like reading something warm and […]

Do I look like I drink water?

I think most of us know Retta from Parks and Rec, where she played Donna Meagle and was part of the TREAT YO SELF phenomenon of 2011. I also knew she loved the LA Kings and Hamilton, but really didn’t know much else about her before listening to her audiobook. Now I know a lot about her…but I still don’t really feel like I know her. RETTA, WHO ARE YOU? You love handbags. You love your hardworking, immigrant parents. You love Duke University. You are […]

A lovely fairy tale that came at just the right time

November 12, 2018 by llp 1 Comment

I am quite sure I found a review of this book on the CBR site, and it sounded like a lovely warm book to read in what has been a challenging few weeks. It’s a Newberry Award winning young adult book, filled with emotion and magic and love. The book began much like a traditional Brothers Grimm fairytale; a village needs to leave it’s youngest child in the forest on a certain day every year, an offering to an evil witch so that she leaves […]
