Color me surprised: Someone on the internet thinks this book is racist

The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas

March 3, 2019 by KimMiE" 2 Comments

First things first: I want to give a shout out to the Little Free Libraries of the world. A few weeks ago I picked this up from one in my neighborhood and it was my first time borrowing anything from one of those tiny bibliotecas. I’d heard of this novel but might not have been prompted to borrow it if I hadn’t seen it through the friendly little window. I’m inspired to pay it forward by adding something from my “already read” stack when I […]

Muskets and magic, and females in disguise, oh my!

December 31, 2018 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

The Thousand Names has sat on my 2013 TBR shelf for five years now.  Each time I would pick it up I would go, “Eh” and set it back down.  There wasn’t any real reason for my dislike.  My husband had read this and two subsequent books and liked them all.  But for some reason each time I picked it up and the knowledge that it was in part about a colonial like military campaign would give me pause and back on the shelf it […]

Well, I got to 52!

P.S. I love you by Cecilia Ahern

December 31, 2018 by tillie 2 Comments

Ahern wrote this book when she was 21. The premise is clever, a bitter-sweet gimmick where Holly’s husband dies, but he leaves her a series of letters to help her cope in the first year without him. Each letter has a surprise or a challenge and always ends with “P.S. I love you.” “Their plan had been very simple: to stay together for the rest of their lives. ” The book however does not quite work. Writing about the grief and pain of losing someone […]

Love: a perpetual state of semideranged partiality

December 29, 2018 by alphabootoo Leave a Comment

For Real by Alexis Hall is not my normal sort of romance novel (I tend to favor quasi-historical romps). But I kept seeing people recommend it in various different places and I finally picked it up out of curiosity (the list that tipped me over was Slytherin/Hufflepuff pairings). I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It is contemporary BDSM m/m erotica but it has a compelling romance to ground it all. Laurie is a trauma doctor who is pushing 40. He sees 19 […]

This time I also say Yes

December 29, 2018 by alphabootoo 1 Comment

Dear Tessa Dare. I am sorry. I don’t know why I ever said I don’t like your book except that I was expecting my first Romance novel to read a certain way and yours did not and that vexed me. You are delightfully batty and I adore you. Several years ago I made Say Yes to the Marquess my first foray into Romance after decades of giving them side-eye because of cool girl brainwashing. Sadly, I was expecting something more akin to Austen and the […]
