Turning Silver Into Gold

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

December 29, 2018 by Jenny S 2 Comments

I was so excited to get Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik as part of the book exchange because I loved Uprooted and had read and enjoyed the first book in Novik’s Temeraire series this summer. This is a loose (very loose) retelling of Rumpelstiltskin set in a past both realistic and imaginary and involving three young women.  Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders, and she takes over her father’s business when his inability to demand payment leaves her family almost destitute and her […]

CBR Book Exchange: Thank you, borisanne!

December 27, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  I received a Kindle copy of the celebrity memoir This Will Only Hurt a Little the day before Christmas, and a follow up package with a Hogwarts mug that looks like a cauldron (y’all, it’s got little legs/stands) after Christmas.  Super excited about both, and I have already started the memoir, and some of her comments are so relatable!  Thank you again to borisanne, I know you mentioned some logistical issues (I will definitely pick up Educated!) but it […]

A friendly kick in the pants

December 20, 2018 by KatSings 1 Comment

A huge thank you to Crystal Clear for jump starting my next CBR, which will hopefully be more successful than this one was. I read 21 books and managed to review none of them, so there’s no where to go but up!

My first Ilona Andrews was a success!

June 29, 2018 by narfna 10 Comments

Malin gave me this book several years ago in the CBR Book Exchange, promising that I would like it. And then I proceeded to not read it for a very long time. In my defense, it’s one of 215 (as of June 2018) books on my physical and digital bookshelves that I own but have yet to read. One of my reading goals for 2018 was to make a serious dent in my already-owned books, and that included reading all of the books I’ve gotten in the […]

A fun adaptation of a classic book that never quite clicked for me.

June 28, 2018 by narfna 2 Comments

This was a fun way to spend several hours, but I actually think I would have liked it better if I had never read Pride and Prejudice. If you’re not aware, Heartstone is debut author Elle Katharine White’s retelling of the Jane Austen classic (a top ten book for me), but with dragons (and such). I want to be clear that I find nothing wrong with this book at all. It’s a cleverly told story that takes the frame of its source material and transforms […]
