Sleepy? Who Me?

Let’s Get Sleepy! by Tony Cliff

January 8, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

At first, I was not sure what to think of the book called, Let’s Get Sleepy! There are cats chasing a mouse on the cover of Tony Cliff’s book. Not usually a good sign for the mouse. However, this mouse seems to be enjoying the chase. Um… okay, now what? Now what leads to opening the book and reading about a cat waking up early and ready to go. Mama Cat says I guess Sleepy is no longer around and the little cat says that […]

Fern and Otto besties on an adventure

Fern and Otto: A Story about Two Best Friends by Stephanie Graegin

December 17, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Fern and Otto: A Story about Two Best Friends is an adorable book about friendship. But it is also about one friend who probably needs some special glasses to see the adventures right in front of him! And, of course, there are adventures aplenty for Fern and Otto. Much of which are more exciting then first look would assume. These two friends go out looking for an adventure that is more exciting than the one Fern is writing about in her book (enjoying themselves, each […]

Tricks? Nope! Only Treats Here!

Goblin Moon by Jacqueline Rogers

Witch's Cat: Apply Within by Joy H. Davidson

The Ghosts Go Marching by Claudia H Boldt

Little Poet Edgar Allan Poe: Nevermore! by Kate Coombs

October 15, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Halloween is the most awesome holiday. I am known for going overboard for a costume (two and a half hours for hair and makeup anyone?) and scarfing down candy. But I also like the fun books that come out of it. Since this year, things are a little different and if you are not going to be able to (or do not want to) go on a traditional trick-or-treating night, I suggest finding these books and starting a reading treat night. Goblin Moon by Jacqueline […]

I need a cat-chy title so Cat-ch!

A Cat Story by Ursula Murray Husted

September 30, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While I immensely enjoyed this graphic novel of Ursula Murray Husted, there is a scene in A Cat Story that is reminiscent of the Lotus Eaters (I believe it is called that and believe it is from the Odyssey) or a “Hell scene” or a “bad trip.” This, to say the least, was a bit disturbing for me. Up to this point, the story had been sweet (a cat is trying to find a special location/home where they (cats) will not be cold or hungry, […]

I scream you scream for Halloween! (Or: Autumn books that can be Halloween books )

We're Going on a Pumpkin Hunt by Mary Hogan Wilcox

She Wanted to Be Haunted by Marcus Ewert

The Little Kitten by Nicola Killen

A Unicorn Named Sparkle and the Pumpkin Monster by Amy Young

September 25, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This is Halloween, this is Halloween/Pumpkins scream in the dead of night Okay, these four books are on the other side of Halloween. They are not spooky (or at least not to the level of The Nightmare Before Christmas) but they are fun, can acutely be an autumn read (or even anytime read) and can be absolutely perfect for the right audience. We’re Going on a Pumpkin Hunt by Mary Hogan Wilcox is probably my least favorite of the group. That’s not to say it is […]

Is a cookbook that’s more about decoration still a cookbook?

Let's Bake! A Pusheen Cookbook by Claire Belton and Susanne Ng

August 16, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader 7 Comments

Bingo Review 18 How To Cookbook review ahead, but really more of a how to decorate book. Full disclosure: I have not actually attempted anything in Let’s Bake! A Pusheen Cookbook. There is a big reason for that which I will get to shortly. First, for those unfamiliar, Pusheen is a cartoon character popular on the internet, but now perhaps best known for cutesey merchandise, like socks, mystery boxes, and calendars, widely available all over. Pusheen herself is a grey tabby cat, and by now […]
