Deck the Halls

The Christmas Party by Karen Swan

December 8, 2022 by Zirza Leave a Comment

On a cold winter night on Ireland’s west coast, Declan Lorne, the last Lord of Ireland, throws a lavish party at his magnificent castle. The location is wonderful, the guests are old friends who all know each other, the atmosphere is great. But before the night is out he dies, leaving behind his bereft wife, three twentysomething daughters and a dilapidated estate with no money to fix it. The next unpleasant surprise comes when his will is read: he leaves the estate not to his […]

Can We Go Back to the Viking Pirates?

November 29, 2015 by Quorren Leave a Comment

So, with the introduction of the Icecarls in the last book, I thought Nix would spend a bit more time in the world that shouldn’t exist outside the Castle.  I mean, they got giant narwhals, Shield Maidens and other things that have learned to live without sunlight.  Nope, we’re going to go skipping back to the Castle.  Even with Nix’s world building, the Castle is still rather stereotypical with its magical hierarchy and politics.  At least the outside world is new and different.  (Giant narwhals, […]

This series has lost the fun.

I alllllmost two-starred this fucker. For about the first 2/3 of it, I was actively bored. Halfway through, I actually returned it to the library and didn’t expect to pick it back up for a while. Somebody else had a hold on it, so I couldn’t renew it. But it turns out whoever had that hold either didn’t care enough to actually pick the book up, or returned it almost immediately because they didn’t like it. I can sympathize with that. And it got the […]

Time to branch out, I think, “Mr. Castle.”

March 5, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

I’m not sure whether I just wasn’t in the right mood for this, or whether the gag of having tie-in novels supposedly written by a fictional author in a TV show has just run its course, but either way Deadly Heat was less fun than the last couple of installments. (It was still fun, though.) This one picks up where the last one left off, with Detective Nikki Heat embroiled in a manhunt for the turncoat spy that ordered her mother’s murder. A new case […]
