I wanted to love this book, but I didn’t

Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

July 5, 2020 by LanierHgts 1 Comment

cbr12bingo – Cannonballer Says Red, White and Royal Blue received so many excellent reviews from Cannonballers and just in general, that I decided I had to read it. Unfortunately, for me this book was a solid “meh,” bordering on “no thanks.” First, what I did like. I loved that the characters spanned the spectrum of race, color, gender and sexual orientation. I mean, a democratic female president with half Mexican kids, yes please!  I also loved the intimacy of the texts between some of the […]

My First M/M Romance

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

June 9, 2020 by Tracy Leave a Comment

Well, my first m/m romance that isn’t fanfiction. Set during the year that protagonist Alex’s mother is campaigning for her 2nd term as president, the novel focuses on Alex’s relationship with Henry, Prince of Wales. They don’t get along and after an incident in which it appears that they have gotten into a fight, their families require them to pretend to be close friends. The relationship evolves from tense conversation to amusing banter and progresses from there. I loved the banter between Alex and Henry […]

Let Me Live in this Universe!

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

June 4, 2020 by randirock Leave a Comment

I love romance novels, and Red, White & Royal Blue offered me the awesome opportunity to read my  first gay romance. I’m so happy to have made this particular book my initiation. It was fun, well-written, and moving. The love scenes were steamy, and the scenario of a female President of the United States was dreamy. Overall, it was a universe I would love to live in, especially given what we’re currently dealing with in 2020. Alex is the 21-year-old son of the aforementioned POTUS […]

Bit short for a stormtrooper

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

May 8, 2020 by Sophia 1 Comment

Once again I’m late to the game. It wasn’t until I saw Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston on a number of Cannonballer’s favorite books of 2019 that I even heard of it. Then I also found it on NPR’s Best Books of 2019, and I knew I needed to read it ASAP. I was not disappointed. Red, White & Royal Blue was well-written, fun, entertaining, and very sweet. I read it in only a couple of days, and it was a great […]

Red, White, and Royal Blue is the most romantic book I have ever read

Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

February 16, 2020 by pixifer Leave a Comment

Red, White, and Royal Blue is a political, queer, romantic comedy. Alex Claremont-Diaz is the son of President Ellen Claremont, the first woman President of the United States. His archenemy is His Royal Highness Henry, Prince of Wales, youngest grandson of Queen Mary of England. After an argument between the two at a royal wedding, Alex and Henry are forced to make public appearances together to quell the rumors they hate one another. They end up becoming friends, then lovers, and then so much more.  […]

I think I loved it even more on a re-read

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

January 26, 2020 by Malin Leave a Comment

My original, and extremely enthusiastic review of this book, can be found here. This was my first re-read (of what I’m sure will be many) and this time, I chose to listen to the audio book. When I first listened to the sample available on Audible, I was honestly not sure if I liked Ramon de Ocampo’s narration, but after seeing the audio book of this highlighted on a bunch of best of the year lists, I decided to give him a chance. Of course, the […]
