In honor of the late Carrie Fisher, I picked up her audiobook of Wishful Drinking. This was written/performed about 8 years ago after Ms. Fisher went through electroconvulsive therapy, with a side effect of the therapy affecting her memories. So she wrote the show/book to help her remember. I highly recommend the audiobook version, as Carrie reads/performs her own work. We tend to skip around in time a lot, which I suppose is understandable given her condition. Before I picked this up I really had […]
“I’m frightened of the power I have given him over me and of how he will almost certainly abuse it, merely by not being fully aware he has it.”
So… I didn’t really like this one. But I feel bad about that, which is why I’ve waited a few days to post a review. “If anyone reads this when I have passed to the big bad beyond I shall be posthumorously embarrassed. I shall spend my entire afterlife blushing.” I know a lot of people had extraordinary feelings about this book because Carrie Fisher did just passed away. I, too, was very upset by her death as well as the death of her mother, […]
“I want to be one of the most joy-inducing human beings that you’ve ever encountered.”
My initial impulse was to use the following The Princess Diarist quote as title for this review, “If you have a penis and a job, being handsome is a fantastic bonus but hardly a necessity.” My decision to purchase and read The Princess Diarist is not an original one following the death of Carrie Fisher. I am not alone in having found her to be a childhood role model as Princess Leia and again as adult Carrie Fisher. She seemed so approachable and she allowed […]
Goodnight, Sweet Princess …
I happened to be at the Disney park that has franchised most of the Star Wars experience last week when I heard about Carrie Fisher’s passing. Talk about bittersweet, as we saw posters of Princess Leia, from all of her franchise appearances, around the park. I first saw Star Wars on its first release in 1977, and loved her spunky take on the princess, although I have to admit my young teen eyes and heart were mostly focused on the dreamy Luke Skywalker. But I have enjoyed Carrie Fisher […]
“I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra.”
When Carrie Fisher died on December 27th I was devastated. When Debbie Reynolds died the following day I immediately purchased The Princess Diarist and moved it to the top of my TBR pile to hold on to just a few more hours of these dynamic women. While Carrie only mentions her mother a few times in her most recent memoir it was nice to crawl back into a time when Fisher and Reynolds were spoken about in the present tense. “I saw where someone was complaining about […]
Thank you to our most lovely exchange coordinator, faintingviolet, for my new books :D
I came home from a poop day at work to a book exchange package from Katie (faintingviolet) and it made my day. I legit squealed when I opened the first book and saw Wishful Drinking. And I’ve been meaning to read Austenland and start Sandman for yearrrrs. (Although, I will confess that I’m actually super intimidated to start Sandman.) Thank you so much, Katie! And thank you for organizing this beautimous tradition.
