Strike Re-read Completed, Bring on Book Four

Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith (J. K. Rowling pseudonym), Robert Glenister (narrator)

December 4, 2018 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

*Note: This review was completed in 2018 before the author’s views towards our trans siblings began to be widely known. At the time I chose to read this book and review it. My reading experience was what it was and these reviews will remain up, but it should be noted that I find her TERF values abhorrent, which have only become more clear over time, and her doubling down in Summer 2020 has made the decision to walk away from her as a creative force […]

The audiobooks really do make this series better.

This review is mostly going to be me responding to some of my own thoughts from my first review, with some extras thrown in; for example, how I was considering raising this to five stars because I loved Robert Glenister’s narration so much. I love the dead tree versions of this book, but the audio adds another level. Highly recommend if you are so inclined. (I’m leaving my rating at 4.5, rounding down, for now, because of the ending. See below.) Spoilery discussion of several […]

Better and better

I finally got a chance to read the third book in J.K. Rowling’s Cormoran Strike mystery series and it didn’t disappoint. It was definitely the strongest of the three. Robin felt like a lead character, there was some good character work, and the mystery was complicated and interesting. Private detectives Robin and Cormoran are doing pretty well for themselves at the start of Career of Evil. They’ve built a business that’s actually making money and are working at the top of their game. Then, Robin […]

Comoran and Robin Complete Me

January 27, 2016 by Melina 4 Comments

The third installment of the Comoran Strike series begins with yet another gory mystery.  Someone delivers a woman’s severed leg to Robin.  While she’s sickened by this (you know, like people are wont to do when they receive body parts in the mail), Strike is less grossed out and more concerned that someone from his past is sending a very clear message that Robin’s life is in danger.  While the police are focusing their investigation on one of the four people Comoran believes it could […]

You wanted more Robin? You got it.

Oh, man, I have so many thoughts. And I’m also not entirely sure what I think about some of what happened in this book. On the one hand, I LOVED IT. The case and Robin and Strike’s personal lives dovetailed beautifully. So much of this book was character shiz, which is my favorite kind of shiz. And I’ve been saying for the past two books that I wanted MORE ROBIN and MORE ROBIN is exactly what I got. Robin backstory. Robin frontstory. Robin Robin Robin. […]
