My Life with Ariel

Sea Witch by Sarah Henning

The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen

September 13, 2021 by MsWas 2 Comments

When we were selecting which title we wanted to lead for #CannonBookClub, I offered to take The Little Mermaid and Sea Witch—having seen the Broadway show once and the animated movie approximately 10,000 times with my two daughters, I thought I surely knew the source material.  A couple of days later, I was coincidently  recommended Malcom Gladwell’s podcast Revisionist History, and the next 3 episodes he aired was a series on the movie. (Listen to Episode 1 and/or read the article by the guest of […]

well, not exactly. What we have here are two retellings of classic fairy tales: Charles Perrault’s deeply upsetting Donkeyskin (recently reviewed by our very own BlackRaven) and Hans Christian Andersen’s  also unsettling The Little Mermaid. Both of these entries are picks for our upcoming #cannonbookclub event- and I’ll be discussing Deerskin further during our Zoom- but in the meantime, let these two help you choose your pick(s)! Also- both of these tales of girls on the cusp of womanhood have been reclaimed and retold by women. […]

“I thought how great it would be if we could trade in Fudge for a nice cocker spaniel.”

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume

Okay people. I think the last three reviews I have written start with hand-wringing about being behind in reviews. This time is no different. Except for how I am determined, or should I say DETERMINED to get caught up. I have a twisted process in that I don’t like to keep reading if I haven’t reviewed, so now I’m in this twisted merry-go-round of I want to read, but I’m behind in reviews, but I’m more behind than I’ve been in a bit so it […]

The One Where I Review All the Young at Heart Book Club Picks, Finally.

Ghost Squad by Claribel Ortega

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

I read these books all together for our Young at Heart book club so it only feels right to review them all together. Our goal for book club was to find book selections that reminded us of childhood in order to (hopefully) inspire a bit of lighthearted nostalgia. For the most part, these books succeeded on that metric for me. Ghost Squad – 4 stars Up first is Claribel Ortega’s Ghost Squad. I often have trouble sinking into Middle Grades books – it is where […]
