Life Moves Pretty Fast: The Lessons We Learned from Eighties Movies by Hadley Freeman

April 20, 2017 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

With nearly 50% of the vote, our book club choice for June is Life Moves Pretty Fast: Lessons We Learned from Eighties Movies by Hadley Freeman. Check out the discussion questions, and join the discussion starting June 14th.  As always, I hope that if your vote wasn’t our final choice, that you’ll make the time to read both at some point during Cannonball Read 9 (for those that are curious, the runner up was Tinseltown: Murder, Morphine, and Madness at the Dawn of Hollywood by William J. Mann). […]

Intellectually interesting, not so much enjoyable for me.

April 13, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

Well, I think I’ve put this review off long enough, and it will be a short one, since our fantastic discussion last month covered a LOT of ground. The Devourers is certainly an original take on werewolves, I’ll give it that, but this book was just not for me. I get intellectually what it was going for, and in parts I was engaged, but overall, I just didn’t care. At the beginning of the book, I actively disliked it. As many have said in their […]

Book Club Reads Non-Fiction – Voting

April 12, 2017 by faintingviolet 11 Comments

Voting for this Book Club is Closed. Come see what we chose on our Announcement Post, and join us on June 14. It is time once again friends to decide what book we want to tackle as a group. Following a great discussion, if not great reading, for our Fantasy pick, it’s time to head in a new direction, west you might say – and fall into some Non-fiction about the history of Hollywood. Below you will find our four choices, which cover different times […]

Book Club Discussion Post: The Devourers

March 7, 2017 by faintingviolet 79 Comments

Welcome to our first #CannonBookClub of 2017! We’re tackling the fantasy work The Devourers by Indra Das. First, a personal thanks to all of you who attempted this book: reading something because you are ‘supposed to’ is rarely as fun as reading something because you want to, but I always feel our discussions more than make up the difference. Ground rules remain the same as they always have. For those of you who might be joining us for the first time (hello new friends!) all […]

February 28, 2017 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

Discussion day is today, 3/8 – Visit the discussion page and join the conversation!   Hello Book Clubbers! We’re about 9 days away from our book club meeting on Wednesday March 8th to discuss Indra Das’ The Devourers. I’ll be honest, I’ve not finished it yet, but I did want to get this reminder post up for those of you who are like me, and get some of the possible discussion topics out for you to be thinking about. I’ve seen a variety of reviews […]
