cbr12bingo – Cannonballer Says

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

August 17, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos 6 Comments

Y’all really got me with this one! Bothari43 first grabbed my attention with an excellent review/cat pic combo, then Bea Pants increased my interest with promises of broad swords and dirty magazines. I don’t usually read much Science Fiction/Fantasy, but after the surprise hits of new favorite Becky Chambers (whom I would not have found without the help of Cannonball), I decided to give it a go! I was wary at first of the breakdown of Houses; I am often scared off by complex mythologies, […]

Atticus was almost home when the state trooper pulled him over.

Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff

Flygirl by Sherri L Smith

August 2, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I didn’t actually mean to put these books side by side in choosing to read them so close together. But they share a few similarities. Flygirl takes place in the 1940s and deals heavily with segregation and passing. And Lovecraft Country takes place in the 1950s and also deals heavily with segregation, as well as the Green travel guide, Jim Crows laws, and a…kind…of passing. But the weird thing both shared, in back to back days was that both, in dialog, used the word “panic […]

Been on my ‘recommended by a Cannonballer’ list for years now… (#Cannonballer Says!)

Confessions by Kanae Minato

July 25, 2020 by Aquillia 2 Comments

Confessions by Kanae Minato could have been my White Whale, but I’ve chosen to count it as my Cannonballer Says square because I never would have heard of it if it hadn’t been for Cannonball Read! I saw a review here a few years ago (I think it must have been ElCicco’s!) and was super intrigued, but hadn’t been able to get it from my library (and I was committed to not buying books until I got a better-paying job–not coincidentally, I read this while commuting […]

When will my reflection show / who I am inside (CBR 12 Bingo: Cannonballer Says)

Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino

Thanks Lowercasesee for the recommendation from last year’s CBR, even if this was absolutely something I heard about from multiple sources as being up my alley, I’m giving you the credit for having the pull quote I liked best from the book as well. “…planning a wedding is the only period in a woman’s life where she is universally and unconditionally encouraged to conduct everything on her terms.” Huyup.  I was pretty damn easygoing as a bride (seriously, one of my bridesmaids was convinced we […]

Hoping the series picks up in the sequels

The Unleashing by Shelly Laurenston

July 3, 2020 by Malin Leave a Comment

CBR12Bingo: Cannonballer Says (previously reviewed by alwaysanswerb, yesknopemaybe and teresaelectro) Official book description: Kera Watson never expected to face death behind a Los Angeles coffee shop. Not after surviving two tours lugging an M16 around the Middle East. If it wasn’t for her hot Viking customer showing up too late to help, nobody would even see her die. In uncountable years of service to the Allfather Odin, Ludvig “Vig” Rundstrom has never seen anyone kick ass with quite as much style as Kera. He knows one […]

Blessed Be The Fruit of Margaret Atwood’s Mind

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood

October 24, 2019 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Oh boy, where to begin. I read The Handmaid’s Tale for the first time two years ago and I was terrified.  I agree with the many think pieces on how the timing was right for a resurgence, what with the creeping anti-abortion laws in the southern States.  Despite this, I always thought that Canada was beyond the American abortion debate but the last two years suggest otherwise: Alberta elected an anti-abortion Premier (Jason Kenny) and the leader of our official Opposition Party (Andrew Scheer) is […]
