O, Canada and Terry Fox!

Terry Fox (Little People, Big Dreams) by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara

August 3, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Who is Terry Fox? In the picture book, Terry Fox (Little People, Big Dreams) we see who this young person was and how they influenced not only his own country of Canada but influenced people around the world in the search for a cure for cancer. Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara created a book that is a love or hate book, with little in between. Though, as a reviewer I am on Team In Between. I like that there is a picture book biography of someone […]

For the love of all the things, correctly labelling genre and providing content warnings matters.

Always, in December by Emily Stone

January 15, 2022 by faintingviolet 6 Comments

I don’t normally suggest reviewing a book while angry at it, but here we are. I should probably wait to further reflect on why I’m feeling this way. But. But I have already angrily thrown it into the return slot at the library and after four hours of being annoyed, and having it come right back to front of mind the moment I was done watching the finale of the Station Eleven adaptation I have decided to try to purge my anger into digital ink […]

Izzy Kline Has Butterflies by Beth Ain

July 9, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr13bingo FREE In late June 2021 I started Izzy Kline Has Butterflies while sitting at a table, outside the local café which was closed, and I was eating a greasy piece of pizza from the shop up the road. But I figured the owners would not mind. I know them well enough, and it was not like I was being disrespectful while enjoying this treat. Besides, it was too nice to sit inside.  Therefore, it was only appropriate that I finish Beth Ain’s book sitting […]

Let’s Go

Letting Go of Gravity by Meg Leder

June 10, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Letting Go of Gravity is a book with a very teen romance without some of the usual teen romance (she barely kisses the love interest, but there is a spark between them), and a book that is also dealing with family and expectations that they place on us and that we place on ourselves. Not all characters are a 100% likable as they can be typical characters; sometimes even almost stereotypical, but they are not horrible people either. There are several obvious plot points and […]

November Fundraising: The Best Thing That Happened to Me This Week Was You

November 20, 2020 by MsWas Leave a Comment

In this dumpster fire of a year, the most unexpected highlights in my 2020 turned out to be you, Cannonballers. Just this week, one of LanierHgts’s reviews garnered a comment from the author, Phyllis Fagell, saying that this review was the best thing that happened to her this week. And it’s all because LanierHgts read Middle School Matters. Every single time an author comments on a CBR review, it’s a thrill and really keeps me going; and so I thank you all from the bottom […]
