“It’s not fair that evil bosses are just oppressive losers in real life.”

Second Chance with the Demon by Chace Verity

May 1, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

When your terrible boss tells you he would never screw you over and that you are the most important employee, things are about to get really bad at work. The more of Chace Verity’s books I read, the more I love them. Their characters are soft, accepting, respectful, funny, and extremely horny. hen they get to the point where they are having sex, there is so much joy. Chrystal loves writing video games even though the small company she works for is rife with toxic […]

Jana belted out the lyrics with feeling, emotion, and, more than anything else, joy. She let go of all her inhibitions, didn’t think at all about how terrible she sounded or what the aunties and uncles were thinking right now.

Jana Goes Wild by Farah Heron

April 11, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I started Jana Goes Wild and then decided I needed to go back and read Kamila Knows Best, a book I own, but hadn’t read. Reading the two back to back was a great decision. Kamila Knows Best is a retelling of Jane Austen’s Emma, with Jana and Anil in the Jane Fairfax and Frank Churchill roles. Jana Goes Wild, set some 5 years later, is the resolution of their story. If you haven’t read Kamila yet, you don’t absolutely need to, but you should […]

Double Cannonballing with Canadian Zombies, Necromancers, and Demons

One Heart by Chace Verity

September 26, 2022 by Emmalita 9 Comments

Chace Verity is one of my favorite authors of the past couple of years. Their soft Canadian demon romances are delightful, weird, and fun. They also acknowledge and address the frustrations of existing in late stage capitalism with it’s dehumanization and the constant grind of mere existence. In One Heart, they give us a true romance where the love interest dies early in the book and then raise their middle fingers at Canada’s far Right. Perfect for spooky season election season. (If you can register […]

Jake Tong didn’t believe in love at first sight, not until it happened to him.

Her Favorite Rebound by Jackie Lau

March 4, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Her Favorite Rebound is the fourth book in Jackie Lau’s excellent Cider Bar Sisters series. It would be helpful to have read the previous books, but it isn’t necessary. You should, because they are great, but if this is your first book, you won’t be totally lost. Despite dating a billionaire and happily running her own small stationary shop, Sierra Wu has frustrations in her life. Her family never approves of her. She shares a name with a famous fictional demon slayer character (imagine if […]

Finally! A Truly Trashy Romance

Match With the Demon by Chace Verity

January 10, 2022 by Emmalita 7 Comments

For years, people have been asking me about the trashy romances I read. Sadly I have had to explain that none of the romances I read are trashy. It’s very confusing for everyone. I’m not sure where they got the idea that romances are about trash. Finally I can hold up and recommend a trashy romance. In Chace Verity’s third cozy Canadian demon romance, Match With the Demon, a recent empty nester dad matches on a dating site with an improbably handsome man, who turns […]

This Was Great, Except for that One Thing I Hated

Fierce at Heart by Zoe York

January 29, 2021 by Emmalita 4 Comments

This would be a 4 1/2 – 5 star read if it weren’t for the inclusion of some completely unnecessary trauma. Before I talk about what I hated, I want to talk about what I loved. Fierce at Heart explores a modern marriage of convenience between friends who want to support each other as they take on new, post military, careers. Isla Petersen had been Adam Kincaid’s commanding officer during a difficult tour in Afghanistan. A few years later, Adam is in Toronto about to […]
