I really want a fancy gourmet donut now

Donut Fall in Love by Jackie Lau

December 16, 2021 by Malin 1 Comment

Disclaimer! This was an ARC from Netgalley. My views are my own, and I had already pre-ordered the book before getting the advanced reader copy. Ryan Kwok is grateful for the opportunities he’s been given. While his latest movie, a romantic comedy, isn’t getting the ravest of reviews, he’s fully aware that it’s unusual enough for rom coms to star Asian actors and he’s lucky to have gotten the chance as a romantic leading man. He’d also like to be famous for more than his […]

Bring Out Yer Dead!

Bury Your Dead by Louise Penny

December 14, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

This was cruising to a 4-star rating and probably the title of my favorite Gamache read. And instead, it lands at 3. Why? A variety of reasons. I liked that most of the action, specifically Gamache’s action, took place outside of Three Pines. I don’t find Three Pines as fascinating as the writer does. Ideally, this series would just take Gamache to different parts of Quebec. Such is life. I also liked that Penny gave Jean-Guy some run. Occasionally, she writes him as too much […]

An ARC I really should have reviewed back in August, when the book came out

Bidding for the Bachelor by Jackie Lau

October 26, 2021 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Disclaimer! I got an ARC of this from the author. That has in no way influenced my review. Cedric Fong is pressured by his family to take part in a bachelor auction to benefit the Fong family’s charity work. He’s not at all interested in dating, he just needs to find himself a new place to live and actually manage to start writing his second novel, but once his grandmother promises to make him two hundred of her special dumplings, Cedric can no […]

“Mr. Responsibility and Ms. Take Care of Everyone…Wherever might the two of you find common ground?”

Wild at Heart by Zoe York

October 3, 2021 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Zoe York’s Wild at Heart was a balm to read after flailing around in a fantasy novel that should have worked for me, but did not. It was nice to slip into York’s small Canadian town where everyone knowing everything about everyone is a blessing and a curse. For Catie Berton, what people don’t seem to care to know is what bothers her the most. That, and also that Will Kincaid thinks her town improvement ideas are dumb.  Will thinks Catie is bossy, and she […]

Current events, old story

Borders by Thomas King

September 24, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My reader copy of Borders by Thomas King was not finished, therefore, most of my feelings of the book come from an incomplete galley with missing illustrations. I would have liked to see more closely some of the emotions and actions the art of Natasha Donovan would have shown as this would have made the reading a bit smoother. However, I enjoyed this book and will look for it when it comes out to reread it in a completed state. The artwork is what moves […]

Brutal Indeed

The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny

September 18, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR13Bingo: Book club. I’m part of a mystery readers book club that goes through the Gamache series.  Whoo is the title accurate. Throughout the book, I had a sense of where it was going to go because I’ve read enough of this series and I’m aware of why it is so popular (handsome guy who everyone wishes was their dad blows into charming, rustic village to solve the case) to take the liberty of assumption as I pour through it. But I […]
