Different tune, same story

Battle of the Bands by Eric Smith and Lauren Gibaldi

September 5, 2023 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

There’s a thing that happens when you totally crush out on someone. It’s like you can feel your heartbeat in every part of your body. There’s a euphoric kind of excitement mixed with sadness and terror. It’s hard to explain, but it happens in an instant and then just explodes and grows from there, consuming your every waking thought and sometimes your dreams. You can’t escape from it. It takes over and runs the controls that make you . . . you. Suddenly, you aren’t […]

Two tales of Charlotte

A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro

Murder on Cold Street by Sherry Thomas

February 14, 2021 by Catticus Finch 1 Comment

I finished reading these two books recently, and since they shared a common named protagonist, it seemed like a no brainer to review them together.  Both of these feature Charlotte Holmes, solver of mysteries, but in very different settings. Book:  A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro “The two of us, we’re the best kind of disaster. Apples and oranges. Well, more like apples and machetes.”  There are many iterations and retelling of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson out there these days.  This one is […]

YA Round-Up

A Study in Charlotte (Charlotte Holmes, #1) by Brittany Cavallaro

The Last of August (Charlotte Holmes, #2) by Brittany Cavallaro

Pulp by Robin Talley

The Black Coats by Colleen Oakes

The Princess and the Fangirl (Once Upon a Con, #2) by Ashley Poston

Here are several YA novels, most of which were pretty good (Pulp was GREAT) if anyone needs to fill a Youths square! (4 stars) A Study in Charlotte (Charlotte Holmes #1) by Brittany Cavallaro I was going to wait and review these for the Sherlock Retelling discussion, but then I realized I’ll be out of town for that and I’m terrible about participating in those discussion anyway so instead I’m going to review it now so y’all can read it and discuss it in my place. […]

Neither Character Is As Awful As I Thought They Were In the Last Book

May 17, 2018 by Melina Leave a Comment

Ahhh what glowing praise I’ve bestowed upon the characters in my title. hahaha. I won’t be able to talk much about the plot of this book unless I was willing to talk about some major plot points from the second book because you might want to read that book.  I personally never want to read that book ever again as it destroyed two characters that I loved in the first book, A Study in Charlotte.  I disliked The Last of August so very much that I wasn’t […]

Too Many Loose Threads and Stinkyness

March 24, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Ok. Well that’s that series done. I’m really not sure how I feel about The Case for Jamie. I was intrigued by the first novel A Study in Charlotte and liked quite a few things about it, but I absolutely hated the second The Last of August. It was too much of a shift in tone, some of the characters were too unsympathetic or cliché, and there were some holes in the plot and relationships that bothered me. This final part of the trilogy was […]

Don’t go there!

April 16, 2017 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Things I liked: meeting Leander, the Mission Impossible-like mystery and accompanying reveals and re-reveals about characters and events, Jamie’s dad, and meeting Charlotte’s dad. Things I didn’t like: Charlotte and her mother, Charlotte with her family, the hints about Charlotte and her future, and the separate investigations going on at the same time by characters who each want to solve things first (this of course does not end well). Charlotte gets more withdrawn and less relatable than before, which is kind of a shame because […]
