Duncan Kincaid Has Bad Judgement When It Comes to Women

Leave the Grave Green by Deborah Crombie

July 30, 2023 by Kit Moonstar Leave a Comment

Duncan and Gemma are pulled into a case as a favor for a higher up when Connor Swann, the son in law of Sir Gerald and Dame Caroline, is found floating dead in the river.  It’s an odd case to begin with where the deceased’s in laws seemed to have liked him better than their own daughter, his wife Julia.  There’s also the fact that their young son died in a similar manner twenty years ago and the only witness was his sister.  It doesn’t […]

Murder Does Not Take a Vacation

A Share in Death by Deborah Crombie

July 30, 2023 by Kit Moonstar Leave a Comment

Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid was looking forward to a nice vacation in the country after a rough case.  Thanks to his cousin, he’s got a spot at a timeshare in Yorkshire and plans on enjoying his holiday.  Unfortunately, he’s barely been there a night when one of the staff is found floating dead in the pool.  As much as Duncan knows he should stay out of it, when the local investigator starts the case by dismissing it as a suicide, Duncan can’t help but get […]

“you underestimate the detective instinct of village life”

The Murder at the Vicarage (1930) by Agatha Christie

July 22, 2023 by drmllz Leave a Comment

Bingo row 2, dwelling–the titular vicarage/crime scene. The vicarage in England is where the pastor of the Anglican Church lives–it’s usually associated with teas with the church ladies and sermon-composing and parish administration, rather than murder–especially the murder of a church warden. The cover of my edition is annoyingly irrelevant–the vicarage is far more important than the graveyard. We find out far more about the vicarage as a crime scene than as a dwelling here; Christie tends to sketch rather than paint a background. We […]

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

October 13, 2022 by xoxoxoe 3 Comments

In The Thursday Murder Club a group of retirees gather weekly to solve puzzles and mysteries – courtesy of a friend who has retired from the police force and who has a pile of unsolved cold cases to amuse and intrigue them. The story is told from more than one viewpoint and the reader is given the choice to read between the lines of some accounts, or to consider the reliability of the narrator. The Club soon evolves from being armchair detectives to the real thing […]

Nothing better than reading Agatha Christie on a train!

Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie

August 25, 2019 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

CBR11bingo: Summer Read I have long been a fan of Agatha Christie. Last year, when I finally got around to reading Murder on the Orient Express, I was surprised to discover that her writing was, perhaps, not as nuanced as I remembered it from when I used to devour her novels in grade school. So I was pleasantly surprised at Death on the Nile; I’d even hazard to say this might be one of Christie’s best. Although I saw the movie many years ago, I […]
