And so the Lightbringer saga comes to an end (spoiler free review on my thoughts of the series as a whole).

The Burning White: Book Five of the Lightbringer Series by Brent Weeks

January 26, 2020 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Several years ago, I asked my husband to find me a new author and surprise me with a book for my birthday.  Usually I give him a list of books, or at least authors, and he selects from there.  While I always get something I want, I’m never surprised.  Armed with the names of some of my favorite authors, he went to our local independent and asked for help from the excellent staff.  They suggested The Black Prism by Brent Weeks, first book in the Lightbringer […]

Dark high fantasy that just didn’t do it for me.

November 4, 2017 by bonnie 1 Comment

Many years ago, my sister had told me about the Way of Shadows, a fantasy novel and part of a trilogy that she had read. I was sufficiently intrigued and added it to my TBR. Two CBR Book Exchanges ago, Malin had graciously added it to my book haul and hoped that I would enjoy the reading experience. And, while I admit that this book was not my cup of tea, I am grateful for the experience and the diversity in reading material that she […]

The first one’s always free

August 18, 2017 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

A few years ago I challenged my husband to find me a new author.  He came back with Brent Weeks’s The Black Prism, volume one of the “Lightbringer” series.  I loved it and instantly became a fan.  Looking into him I discovered that he had previously written “The Night Angel Trilogy”.  While curious to read more outside of the Lightbringer books by this newly discovered author, my TBR is deep, so I passed on seeking it out and instead focused on the books physically in front of […]

Learned all the wrong lessons from George RR Martin

January 4, 2017 by ingres77 8 Comments

This, the second book in the Night Angel trilogy, picks up where The Way of Shadows left off. If you haven’t read the first book, and don’t want spoilers, read no further. I loved the first book. I loved it to the point that my excitement to read the next book in the series, and my obsession with telling everyone about it, became so hyperbolic that I knew my feelings didn’t actually correspond to what I actually read. It was good, in other words, but […]

Spectacularly failing to complete a half cannonball

December 29, 2016 by Dome'Loki 6 Comments

“The Blood Mirror” is review number 17, not nearly where I had hoped to be this time of year.  Once I accepted I would not  be reaching my half cannonball goal I decided to fail spectacularly and get a long book off my plate to make a fresh attempt in 2017.  The Lightbringer series are hefty books.  “The Blood Mirror” clocks in at 704 pages.  While only reviewing 17 books I actually read 24 this past year.  Clearly writing the reviews is where I’m falling […]

It’s a travesty this has only been reviewed once before (thanks, bonnie!)

December 17, 2016 by ingres77 2 Comments

I would love to rhapsodize about this book, but I’m kind of pressed for time (doubt I’ll be able to write this review before Christmas, and I don’t want to hold off since I just finished this book and it’s fresh in my mind). The best way I can describe this, I think, is to say that The Way of Shadows (2008) a bit like The Name of the Wind (2007) by Patrick Rothfuss mixed with an Assassin’s Creed video game. Azoth is an impoverished child […]
