Ringing in the new year with Brandon Sanderson short fiction Cosmere nerdery.

January 2, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

Good way to start off the year, with a mini-Brandon Sanderson marathon in book form. I spent a cozy day on my couch yesterday visiting the Cosmere, and it was lovely. This collection is more than just a collection of all of Sanderson’s short fiction set in the Cosmere (a shared universe world that a majority of Sanderson’s works are set it in). It’s also a mini-study of the Cosmere itself. Each system (i.e. the Roshar system, where the Stormlight Archive books are set, or […]

Another ‘gifted teenage misfit destined to save the world’ story, but with a few original bits

December 27, 2016 by Bothari43 2 Comments

I had seen Sanderson’s name on Cannonball multiple times, but I wasn’t sure where to start. A friend recommended Mistborn, so I figured a double recommendation (meatspace friend and CBR folks) was a pretty sure thing. And I really enjoyed it, even though I can’t tell which book in the series this is (there’s a snippet of ‘the concluding volume of the Mistborn trilogy’ in the back of the book, though Amazon tells me this is the first one). Teenage thief Vin lives in a […]

Narfna, you’re my book lobster. Thanks for knowing exactly what I needed today.

I just got home (from book shopping, naturally) and found a lovely package from Narfna waiting for me. So amazing that she just KNEW I had finished The Wise Man’s Fear just last night and was in need of a new fantasy to keep me busy. Also, how gorgeous is that Catherynne Valente book? Can’t wait to read it. And Night Shift!!!! Amazing. Thanks so much. Your choices were perfect. Cannonball book exchange truly is the most wonderful time of the year.

“Life was so unfair. You couldn’t both destroy everything around you and live like a king…”

November 11, 2016 by Caitycat Leave a Comment

We’ve reached the grand finale of the Reckoners trilogy, and I’ve actually read them all! Our Reckoners*, led by David and his new girlfriend Megan, are still fighting the good fight against the evil Epics. It’s harder than ever after their former leader, Prof, went to the Dark Side. Now, he is an Epic who goes by Limelight. Thankfully, the Reckoners have a plan to get their old friend back. *Reckoners are regular people who fight Epics** **Epics are people who were given powers after […]

My first Brandon Sanderson 3-Star Read, with a caveat!

October 12, 2016 by narfna 2 Comments

Sad to say White Sand didn’t quite work for me. That’s a first for me and Brandon Sanderson, but in this instance, I’m hesitant to count it. I didn’t realize until I opened this book up that Sanderson didn’t actually write it. Okay, but wait, let me back up a little. So White Sand is actually Brandon Sanderson’s first completed novel. He put it away for a while after writing it, and then brought it out years later to revamp it, but ultimately, it was […]

Fight the Power

September 15, 2016 by Malin 6 Comments

Because it’s been nearly a month since I finished this book (yay, backlogs!) and because the blurb does a good job of summing up the story, I’m going to resort to Goodreads: Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics. But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came a desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his will. Nobody fights […]
