“We’re going to try something new.”

Rhythm of War (The Stormlight Archive, #4) by Brandon Sanderson

December 30, 2020 by narfna 3 Comments

What a wonderful book. I don’t know why I’m still surprised at this point at how good a book in this series turned out to be. I love all of these books, but there was something extra-wrenching about this one, as we really start to dig into not only the escalating mythology but the characters’ heads and hearts in ways that are only really possible because Sanderson has spent 3,500 pages before this providing the world’s most epic foundation. This is why I love epic […]

A re-read before Rhythm of War.

Oathbringer (The Stormlight Archive, #3) by Brandon Sanderson

Honestly not sure what I’m about to type, because I don’t want to do a full review. I hadn’t re-read this book since it first came out and I knew I barely remembered it, and even the detailed summaries over on the Coppermind wouldn’t be good enough for to prep for book four. It really helped me when this book came out in 2017 that I had books one and two fresh in my mind from a recent re-read, so I got the audiobook from […]

Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson

I’ve never read a Brandon Sanderson book I didn’t like. He’s insanely prolific, which sharply contrasts him with some of his colleagues, and is sturdy and reliable. And (I say this every time I read a book of his), I really just accept the fact that I’m going to like them and that everyone is right: these are good books. Maybe it’s just the contrarian in me, but I’m always skeptical. And The Way of Kings was no different. I bought this book….maybe five years […]

Small note: I had every intention of reading Rhythm of War before posting this but I will not be getting to it before the year ends. Why is every hold at my library available RIGHT NOW?! The Stormlight Archive I used to loathe science fiction and fantasy books.  Those books were for nerds and in middle school, I would not be a nerd. Well, fast forward *ahem* about *cough*twenty*cough* or so years and I read SF/F almost exclusively when I read fiction. As a result, […]

Two powerhouses of speculative fiction do not necessarily equal a great story.

The Original by Brandon Sanderson and Mary Robinette Kowal

I could’ve sworn I’d already reviewed this novel, but I apparently haven’t. I read it about a month ago, and I barely remember it. Because of that, I had to look up the plot write-up on Amazon: “In the near future, humans choose life – for a price. Injectable nanite technology is the lifeblood that flows through every individual wishing to experience the world through the lens of their own theme. While death from mortal wounds is still possible, life is made easier in a […]

Mistborn Era 2

The Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson

Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson

The Bands of Mourning by Brandon Sanderson

My goodness, I read ten books by Brandon Sanderson this year. I will probably finish The Rhythm of War when it comes out too. What a Cosmere-centric year! That universe represents about 20% of everything I read this year. This series is known within the Cosmere as Mistborn Era 2. It takes place about 300 years after the events of the Mistborn Era 1. In those missing years, Scadrial has undergone somewhat of an industrial revolution. There is burgeoning electricity and motorized vehicles are beginning […]
