Messenger: The Legend of Muhammad Ali by Marc Bernardin

October 15, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have wanted to read Messenger: The Legend of Muhammad Ali by Marc Bernardin and illustrated by Ron Salas for a while now. It is from the company First Second. Their graphic novels are usually fun, educational, clever, unique and interesting. I might not like all of them, but I do appreciate them. And while I am not a fan of Muhammad Ali, I have enjoyed a few biographies of the man, so I figured why not try this one. The introduction to things comes […]

The stories of two young men

Hands by Torrey Maldonado

Garvey in the Dark by Nikki Grimes

March 21, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I needed a short read or two. I found two, while terribly short looking, books that also felt like they would have some “meat” to them. And those books were Hands by Torrey Maldonado and Garvey in the Dark by Nikki Grimes. I was familiar with Grimes, as they are the author of Garvey’s Choice and others I enjoyed reading. But Maldonado was new. Hands looked like it would be a boxing book. And it is, somewhat. But really what the book is about are […]

A piece of Molly

The Bones of Me by Kel Duckhouse

July 5, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr15bingo Violence I misplaced my finished copy of  The Bones of Me after having a slow start with it, but once I was able to sit down and read without too many interruptions, it started to move. The mixture of prose and prose poetry can be a bit off putting, but it fits the idea of things. Perhaps things can be a bit too cliché in places, but it would have been a book I loved ages (at least) 12 and up. There is some […]

Boardwalk Empire

Casino Moon by Peter Blauner

August 14, 2019 by Jake Leave a Comment

I collect Hard Case Crime books as a hobby. I love crime novels and I love the simplicity of HCC works: nothing pretentious, just good ol’ fashioned pulp fiction. However, I’m really bad at reading what I collect. I think I take it for granted that these books may be around for awhile and that, unlike most books I purchase, I’m not giving them up. So I only read about two a year in a collection of sixty or so. One of the great things […]

A Fight Far From Fair

December 31, 2015 by Jenny S 1 Comment

If you’re a fan of Sarah Waters or Emma Donoghue (doing historical fiction), then I think you’ll like this novel—a story partly centered around Ruth, a woman boxer in Bristol in the 19th century but also following several other characters she comes in contact with—George, a gentleman with poor prospects and a penchant for gambling, and Charlotte, a wealthy young woman scarred by small pox and trapped by the men in her life. All three characters are struggling to make their way in the world—trapped […]
