CBRBingo – Award Winner – Trevor Noah Triumphs!

Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

October 30, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Let’s be honest. CBR Bingo has been a boon, and a pill to swallow. I have read great things that I wouldn’t have because of it, but also maddeningly tried to shoehorn things I planned to read into these categories. Well, I am excited to share a trifecta of sorts! This is a book that I wanted to read, because I had friends rave about it, it is a selection of my local library book club, AND it fits into a bingo square! A number […]

Yes, this memoir is as good as everyone says.

If you like audiobooks at all, I would suggest doing this by audio. I know I enjoyed it a lot more than I would have reading in another format because Trevor Noah narrates it himself, and his voices for everyone are very charming. There’s also something very satisfying about hearing someone tell stories about their life in their own voice. This book is made up of a series of interconnected stories about his youth in South Africa, from when he was “born a crime,” with […]

Context and Choices

March 6, 2018 by Emmalita 3 Comments

My uncle, an occasional Cannonballer, sent me Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime and an awesome coffee mug for Christmas. I was delighted. I love reading and drinking coffee. The beginning of the year turned out to be incredibly stressful and I struggled to focus on reading. I finally made it though. I read the book and then I immediately reread the book. It’s so good. Noah introduces each new section or story with a page or two of historical context. The context is necessary to understand […]

Best Audiobook of the Year (Yes, it is only February, don’t care!)

February 5, 2018 by Beth Ellen 5 Comments

How can I have already listened to the best audiobook of the year? It’s only the beginning of February! But I have. It’s that good. Go listen. I didn’t even know much about Mr. Noah going in besides that he hosts the Daily Show, was from South Africa, and does stand up. Doesn’t matter, he tells you all you need to know. So when I told Mr. Beth Ellen what I was listening to his response was, “he’s too young to write a memoir”. And […]

Laugh, Learn and Cry with Trevor Noah

December 26, 2017 by teresaelectro 2 Comments

Trevor Noah’s autobiography, Born a Crime: Stories from A South African Childhood, was my first audio book. I was determined to hear his narration and found the CD version at my local library. My car still has a cd player, so Trevor kept me company during my first week commuting to a new job. All I knew of Trevor Noah was he replaced Jon Stewart, grew up in South Africa and was a comedian. I had no idea what to expect from his book to be honest. […]

This is Criminally Good

February 3, 2017 by Caitlin_D 2 Comments

Audible and Goodreads gave away free copies of Born a Crime a few weeks ago and I jumped at the chance to download a book that was already on my TBR list. This is one of the best celebrity memoirs I’ve ever read because it is not really a celebrity memoir; besides a few throwaway lines about his introduction into touring comedy Noah doesn’t talk about his career. This is a story about growing up as a mixed child with his black Xhosa mother in South Africa […]
