The Book Lovers Guide

Book Love by Debbie Tung

December 9, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I probably cannot say enough good things about Book Love by Debbie Tung. Has the theme been done before? Yes, these are not new issues book lovers have had to deal with. However  they are just fun, everyday issues, loves, joys and heartbreaks of the reader. Each page makes them come alive in silly, cute, relatable black and white images. If you have ever considered yourself a Reader with a capital R,  this is the book you want to read when you need a break […]

Few things as fun as a good book or two

O.K. Is Gay: A Picture Book by Vincent X. Kirsch

Here Is a Book:  A Picture Book by Elisha Cooper

November 22, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

There are few things as fun as a good book. Two of those books were found recently by me via online reader copies. The first by Vincent X. Kirsch is a contemporary story on how it is okay to be gay. And the other is a book about books. Or more accurately how a book goes from idea to your hands. I was a little skeptical about O.K. Is Gay: A Picture Book  as it was mostly starting out as “just another it’s okay to […]

Dear Bookstore I love you

Dear Bookstore by Emily Arrow

November 15, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While the ending was a smidgen pushy in Dear Bookstore, the overall feeling is well done. The illustrations by Geneviève Godbout set the tone that Emily Arrow has presented, well and are a great push for getting readers into brick and motor independent stores. Due mid March 2025, I read Arrow’s book via an online reader copy. The poetic nature of things starts off like any other book you have read about a bookstore. And if you are not paying attention, you will miss the […]

Barbara did whatever she set her mind to do

Because Barbara: Barbara Cooney Paints Her World by Sarah MacKenzie

November 14, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

You might have read my review of Dear Duck, Please Come! by Sarah MacKenzie and Charles Santoso and learned that I was trying to read Because Barbara: Barbara Cooney Paints Her World by Sarah MacKenzie and illustrated by Eileen Ryan Ewen instead, but a mix up with the online link brought me to the duck book. It was a nice surprise, but I still wanted to read about Cooney and was eventually able to locate another online link to the book. Therefore,  I was able […]

“When you’re growing up, you don’t ask whether your family’s good, do you? Especially if you don’t know anything else. They’re just your family.”

Ink Blood Sister Scribe by Emma Törzs

Stepmoms in pop culture get a bad rap. Actually bad rap isn’t right. We are maligned and reduced to a trope, typically gold diggers, people who don’t like kids, and someone who isn’t at all interested in the work of parenting (i.e., the original OG stepmoms like Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, and Snow White or modern like Parent Trap, or the newer Parent Trap, repeat infinity with basically every stepmom forever). In a recent episode of my podcast (linked here, self-promotion is never done) I […]

My books; not your books….

All the Books by Hayley Rocco

October 11, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Piper, a book loving chipmunk and I have a lot in common. We are both book lovers. We have cute, chubby cheeks, we’re not keen on sharing our books, and we both love books. Did I mention that already? Well it is true. And in fact, I’m a book dragon. Well, you might call it hoarding, but I call it dragon. And I would say that Piper is a dragon, too. Only I don’t go as extreme as she does. You see, Piper loves her […]
