Quietude

I Go Quiet by David Ouimet

September 24, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The other day I was talking to a coworker about a book he loved, I Go Quiet by David Ouimet. First, the author picture looks exactly how you would picture this author/illustrator. Not young, not old, and not conservative. The wild mane of hair and the twinkle in his eye made me realize that yes, he is the only person who could have written and illustrated this book. Second, it is hard to explain the book, but the cover gives you a lot of it. […]

A man, his burros, and his books

Biblioburro: A True Story from Colombia by Jeanette Winter

October 28, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Biblioburro: A True Story from Colombia caught my eye because of the vivid cover illustration. It hinted at being a Tomie de Paola story but was not actually feeling 100% right. On closer inspection I learned that this was a Jeanette Winter story. Now curious, I decided to take a minute and read said book. Biblioburro is a lovely story about the power of books. It is based on the true story of how one man’s love of books literally filled his home and he […]

Hello My name is Raven and I am a book sniffer

This Book of Mine: A Picture Book by Sarah Stewart

May 24, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This Book of Mine: A Picture Book by wife and husband team Sarah Stewart (one heck of a writer) and David Small (one heck of an illustrator) is a poetic look at the things we do with books: read, enjoy, chew, learn, even smell them. WHAT? You have never smelled a book? And you call yourself a bibliophile! All kidding aside, I was not expecting a lot of out this short book. Mostly because my inner kid kicked in when I saw the title and I thought “This […]

A story for book and bear lovers!

December 28, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Bearnard’s Book is a bit obvious to the adult reader what Bearnard’s book is going to be about, but Deborah Underwood draws the reader into the story showing the things it might be about. When Bearnard researches books about bears he learns they float, have porridge stolen and are messy. But Bearnard is not able to float (he is a bit afraid to actually) and he does love his porridge, so he just could not deal with it stolen, and well Bearnard is very much […]
